Optimising SSL VPN usage for remote access requirements.

Sonicwall : 01 November, 2007  (Technical Article)
SonicWall responds to recent Stratecast report on virtual private networks with details of its product range for optimising the use of VPNs.
Based on the increasing pervasiveness of mobile devices, the growth in numbers of remote workers and the diversity of network resources now being accessed from outside company walls, SSL VPNs should be required for evaluation by all businesses with remote access needs, according to leading industry analyst Michael Suby of Stratecast (a division of Frost & Sullivan). Stratecast's newly published whitepaper, "An SSL VPN Selection Framework: One Size Does Not Fit All", addresses the wide range of security risks that organisations must consider for secure infrastructure deployments, and provides a set of benchmark criteria to help organisations find the optimal SSL VPN technology for their needs

"Remote access is a fact of life for many businesses," said Michael Suby, Research Program Director, Stratecast. "SSL VPNs are an essential tool for managing security and business risks in a mobile environment. SSL VPN is a remote access solution category explicitly designed to serve this burgeoning need for secure, easily customisable, highly adaptable and end-user friendly remote access."

Because today's remote access requirements for business can be so varied, the process of selecting the SSL VPN solution can be challenging. In evaluating an SSL VPN, businesses should ask themselves how the security appliance will manage to lower their security and business risks. According to Stratecast, the following manageable risks can be addressed by SSL VPNs products:.

1 Unauthorised access—by narrowing the entry point into the business network, representing a first line of defence in unauthorised access.
2 Data leakage—though granular access control.
3 Compliance violations—with several means to control and protect the flow of information.
4 Virus and malware infections—through granular access control narrowing the footprint of systems that could become infected, and insulating back-end systems from attack.

In investigating SSL VPN options, Stratecast recommends that businesses think beyond remote access to ensure that solutions are aligned with the structure and strategy of the organisation. For optimal alignment, businesses should benchmark their remote access infrastructure against considerations including risk mitigation and risk aversion, diversity, and scalability. Overlaying this dimension, organisations should consider ease of use.

Stratecast believes that SonicWALL is poised to assist with this SSL VPN selection process framework. Already an established provider of network and content security appliances, the combined suite of SonicWALL and Aventail SSL VPN appliances provides an SSL VPN product portfolio that meets the multidimensional framework of risk aversion, diversity and scalability of any sized business.

"SonicWALL with its recent acquisition of the Aventail SSL VPN product line offers a wide range of SSL VPN appliances that can satisfy varying requirements and budgets of businesses ranging from large enterprises to small organisations," said Suby.
