Online protection of children the theme of free web guide by Webroot.

Webroot Software : 06 February, 2008  (New Product)
Free guide to child protection on the web accompanies launch of parental control software for filtering web content and blocking access to malicious or dangerous sites.
Webroot Software has announced the availability of Webroot Parental Controls. This update to Webroot's best-of-breed online child safety software brings parents peace of mind with robust security tools to help keep children safe from online threats and manage their use of the PC.

"Webroot is deeply committed to protecting all online users - including children - from security threats. While there is no substitute for discussing online safety with children, leading child advocacy groups believe communication, in addition to using a filtering software, ensures the best online protection for kids," said Peter Watkins, Webroot CEO. "Webroot Parental Controls is the most advanced and flexible software parents can add to their home computers to better manage how the computer is used and what content is acceptable."

Webroot Parental Controls helps parents protect their children from computer risks even when they cannot personally monitor their child's activity. The software blocks access to inappropriate or dangerous web content, and enforces rules for how much computer time is acceptable and which programs can be used. Additionally, Webroot Parental Controls is completely tamper-proof; prohibiting any attempt to bypass security settings or install programs without a parent's permission. The program is fully compatible with the Windows XP and Vista operating systems, and each subscription protects up to three personal computers within the household.

In conjunction with the launch of Webroot Parental Controls software, Webroot has made available a free educational tool for parents, 'Protecting Children Online: A Handbook for Parents. The 14-page handbook comes complete with safety tips, best practices and a glossary of common acronyms and abbreviations used in text messaging and Instant Messaging (IM) so parents can stay 'in the know' with their kids' lingo.

'Protecting Children Online: A Handbook for Parents' is a free, downloadable tool that empowers parents to get involved and teach safe online habits to their children. In addition to best practices, tips and resources, the handbook's glossary educates parents on Internet terms and phrases, such as 'POS' (Parent Over Shoulder) or 'LMIRL' (Let's Meet In Real Life), commonly used by kids online. To download the handbook, visit the Webroot web site.

Top Five Online Safety Tips For Parents:

1 Open a dialogue, talk to your child about Internet safety and surf the web together.
2 Be informed - know what websites your child visits and with whom they are communicating.
3 Become Internet savvy - ask your children to teach you how to use programs they use.
4 If you or your children encounter inappropriate contact, report it immediately to law enforcement bodies. Help your child understand what inappropriate contact means to you.
5 Use filtering or monitoring software. Empower yourself by knowing your child is protected online even if you are not there to supervise.

Key features of Webroot Parental Controls include:

* Customisable Profiles.
* Parents can manage Internet usage for multiple users through customisable profiles that monitor the Web sites their children can access based on any combination of over 60 content categories, specific Web site addresses or keywords.

The Webroot Parental Controls solution is compatible with the Windows Vista operating system. Webroot Parental Controls offers additional safeguards to Windows Vista, to provide a layered security approach to managing children's computer and online activities.

For most of today's teenagers, bypassing existing parental management programs can be easy; Webroot Parental Controls makes it difficult for savvy teens as it can only be removed or modified by the administrator.

Webroot Parental Controls offers both a time limit feature as well as a scheduling feature to help parents manage not only how many hours the kids are spending on the computer, but also when that time is being spent. A parent can easily set up a schedule to manage each child's use of specific programs, allocating the amount of time each day and the specific times that a child can spend on the computer accessing the Internet or playing games.

Parents can restrict the use of computer programs such as chat, games and other existing programs where access should be limited. Restrictions are customisable for each computer user in the home.

Easy-to-manage, customisable reports that inform parents of when and where their children are going online. The reports can be generated daily, weekly or monthly and viewed online or via email, so a parent can even receive reports away from home.

Webroot Parental Controls is priced at £24.95 for a three-user license, and can be purchased at major retail software outlets, such as WHSmith or online. A free 30-day trial version of the software is also available from the Webroot web site.
