One time passwords secure remote access for German MPs.

Kobil Systems : 08 June, 2007  (Application Story)
German Parliament secures network resources against unauthorised remote access by deploying SecOVID one time password system from Kobil
Thanks to Kobil's one-time password system SecOVID, the members of the German Bundestag are now more flexible when accessing parliamentary information systems from mobile workstations. The German IT-security vendor Kobil Systems is providing politicians with a personal SecOVID Token that generates a numeric code serving as one-time password.

From now on, German parliamentarians can safely access the Bundestag's intranet via a handy token that generates a one-time access password at the push of a button. To log into the web portal, users just have to enter the numeric code and their personal identification number. The encrypted one-time password (OTP) is transmitted to the SecoVID server that verifies its validity and denies access if anyone tries to use an OTP a second time. Therefore, hackers will not be able to access the system with spied out passwords.

The cryptographically calculated passwords are absolutely safe and much easier to use than the TAN-based solution used so far. The expenses for administration and support will be heavily reduced since it is no longer necessary to print out countless lists of TAN numbers. Additionally, the lifetime of the Kobil security token is virtually unlimited. After a trial period with a number of selected users, now all parliamentarians have the chance to use the SecOVID Token for mobile access to parliamentary information systems.
