Using redundant Ethernet rings and JetPort Ethernet controllers enables traffic signal control and feedback in harsh environments over metropolitan scale distances

Beijing is China's second largest city, after Shanghai. It is a major transportation centre, with dozens of railways, roads and motorways passing through the city. The city is hosting the 2008 Summer Olympics and to improve the heavy traffic during rush hour, public transportation and intelligent traffic systems are being introduced.

Intelligent traffic systems require Ethernet redundant mechanisms and RS-232/422 to Ethernet converters to enable the remote control of traffic lights and other traffic signs and displays. Fibre converters become a must since the remotely controlled traffic lights may be located dozens of kilometers apart. 4 sets of traffic lights at 4 intersections can be controlled and traffic information collected and transmitted back to the traffic control centre instantly through a JetCon2301's Fibre connection. The JetPort/JetCon Series is the best combination for traffic control applications operating under harsh environments. Connecting the JetPort 5601 to the traffic light controller and link to the JetNet 4508f through the Ethernet then report those signals to the control centre. Using this network architecture provides an Ethernet Ring redundant solution ensuring non-stop data transmission to the traffic control system.
