Network Box sees first signs of seasonal spam onslaught

Network Box : 09 December, 2008  (Technical Article)
Managed security provider warns of imminent holiday seasonal increase in spam with evidence of test mails being sent
The security industry is set to tackle a flood of spam between now and Christmas, according to managed security firm, Network Box. The company has reported seeing a number of 'test' spam emails over the weekend, which indicates the beginning of a concerted spam campaign.

"This is usually a sign that a spammer is testing the waters before a new, orchestrated spam campaign," says Simon Heron, Internet Security Analyst at Network Box.

Thanksgiving, traditionally the beginning of heightened spam activity up to Christmas, once again marked the occurrence of a significant spike in spam traffic, which is now back up to the levels seen before spam hosting site McColo was taken down in the US. McColo's spambots are up and running again.

Heron says: "We've seen a flurry of activity around Thanksgiving week and spam will increase again before Christmas, staying high till New Year. It seems that most of infrastructure that was on McColo has been re-established and we can expect the usual Christmas rush of Spam."
