Natwest most targeted bank in UK for phishers.

ClearMyMail : 22 January, 2008  (Technical Article)
ClearMyMail warns of phishing attacks on UK banks and offers free guide for spotting phishing e-mails.
The UK's only guaranteed anti-spam company has revealed that Natwest tops the financial services league table for the most amount of spam and fraudulent phishing emails.

A leading UK based anti-spam software company is today revealing the UK's Top 10 most popular company names used by email fraudsters when targeting the personal finance industry and shows that Natwest is leading the way.

ClearMyMail reviewed all the spam and fraudulent emails that it had prevented from reaching customers in December 2007 in order to identify the Top 10 preferred financial services companies by fraudsters.

1 Natwest (41% of all phishing emails blocked were targeting Natwest Bank).
2 Citibank (27%).
3 HSBC (11%).
4 Abbey (6%).
5 Lloyds TSB (4%).
6 Pay Pal (internet transaction banking for likes of Ebay - 2%).
7 Royal Bank of Scotland (1%).
8 Nationwide (1%).
9 Halifax (0.8%).
10 MBNA (0.5%).

When looking at the top 5, the company is also able to reveal that during the month every one of its customers were sent an average of 18 fake Natwest phishing emails, 12 fake Citibank emails, 5 fake HSBC emails, 3 fake Abbey emails and 2 fake Lloyds TSB emails - all had been blocked by ClearMyMail.

Speaking about the results Dan Field, Managing Director of ClearMyMail said,

"Without any email protection UK online banking customers are at severe risk of being tricked into giving away their account details to criminal gangs. The Phishing emails used are very well constructed and often look exactly like a legitimate message from the bank".

He continued, "People without home spam and anti fraud email protection have to remain very vigilant as it has almost got to the stage where cyber-crooks are building up a portfolio of email databases containing contact information that is profiled to fit a certain bank or building societies typical customer in order to improve the success rate of their fraudulent attacks".

The company has written a consumer guide on how to spot potential phishing emails and it is available for free.

ClearMyMail is able to block all phishing and spam emails before they reach the customer's computer therefore cutting out any risk of fraud.

UK based ClearMyMail is the only company in the world to offer a complete no spam guarantee. The company prevents all forms of spam and phishing emails, cutting out the risk of fraud and offers a free 14 day trial and then complete email peace of mind comes at only £1.50 per month.

The system has the ability to also stop the new wave of 'image-spam' that has been increasingly hitting in-boxes.

ClearMyMail is the first anti-spam software company to receive a 5-Star award from WebUser magazine and has also received the PC Answers magazine Editors Choice Award. The company has featured in a book written by BBC Radio 2's Website of the Day writer Miles Mendoza who considers it to be "the best of the anti-spam software bunch".

The business has recently won an award for innovation and was short listed for several technical industry awards in 2007.
