National Security Protection Need Not Be Expensive

Titania : 19 October, 2010  (Technical Article)
Titania comments on the national security report of the UK Government
As the country reels from the bite of the hard spending cuts to budgets right across the sector, the developers of Nipper at Titania feel constrained to point out that there need not be a necessity to compromise on our national security, as reported by the BBC today. Ian Ventura-Whiting, Managing Director of Titania Ltd, makes the following comments about today's news item:

There are two big news stories coming from government sources which both have the potential to directly affect every person in the UK in some way. They are the government spending cuts story, with a review coming out this Wednesday (20th October) and the recent UK defence review.

You may wonder how the defence story may impact on so many of us in the UK, but the recent review has highlighted cyber terrorism, or attacks on computer systems, as being at a tier 1 level. Everyday millions over the UK are subjected to attacks against our computer systems, whether it is in the form of malicious emails or hackers attempts to gain access to, or disrupt, the operation of key computer systems. These are the critical national infrastructure systems that play a key part in ensuring that the UK continues to function, such as government departments, financial systems, energy and water suppliers. We should also not forget that it is not just the critical national infrastructure that is under attack, both the UK's companies and individuals are also targeted by malicious hackers and fraudsters.

Government and key infrastructure systems are subjected to, just like in other industry sectors, regular security assessments to ensure our systems are safe from cyber terrorists and malicious hackers. The UK has been a key world leader in the field of computer security for many years, with a history dating back to the computers used at Bletchley Park during the war years. Typically a security assessment on our critical infrastructure will be performed by a team of security specialists with years of experience and as a consequence can seem contradictory to the direction of recent announcements about government spending cuts.

As the industry adapts to a new financial environment, in addition to the evolving threat from cyber terrorists, the UK is again at the forefront. For example, here at Titania Ltd we develop software that helps governments and companies of all sizes perform a more thorough security assessment of their computer infrastructure at a fraction of the cost. Although our software is already widely being used throughout the world, by some of the worlds largest governments, financial institutions, telecommunications sectors and other businesses, we see our own government falling far behind. We hope that here in the UK that the government will make common sense decisions and take advantage of our own security resources, such as the software we develop, which can reduce the burden to the tax payer whilst also meeting the needs of the emerging threats to this country.

As budgets are slashed and resources tightened we can provide cost effective software which has been long established, and has a formidable track record, in helping governments and companies of every size and complexity across the globe perform their own thorough security assessments of their computer infrastructures, at a vastly reduced cost.
