Motor dealership theft deterrent with Optex detectors

Optex Europe : 01 May, 2009  (Application Story)
Car dealers in the north east of England have seen a reduction in car crime thanks to Redwall external detectors installed by Optex
Motor dealership theft deterrent with Optex detectors
Sophisticated Redwall external detection technology from Optex Europe is receiving praise for dramatically reducing crime and thefts from car dealerships throughout the North East.

The rising value of scrap metal last year led to a spate of thefts from forecourts all over the country, with thieves specifically targeting catalytic converters worth of hundreds of pounds.

North East Regional Chairman of the National Security Inspectorate (NSI), NACOSS Regional Gold Scheme, David Gray, was made aware of the problem while attending NACOSS committee meetings. Installers from the South of England were concerned at the increase in thefts, as he explains:

"During last summer the value of raw metal hit an all time high and the amount of catalytic converters stolen increased dramatically. This trend spread to the North, where more than 20 were being stolen from forecourts every month."

It was not just the loss of the parts that was costing the dealer owners dearly, but the cumbersome method the thieves were using to steal the converters, as David Gray continues: "Four-by-fours and people carriers were the main targets because it is much easier to get underneath them to steal the parts. Thieves were cutting the exhaust pipe and removing the converter, so the entire exhaust system would have to be replaced in some cases the cost would run into thousands of pounds."

As SME Sales Director of IDS Fire and Security, David Gray has installed a combination of Optex Redwall and Redwave detectors at several sites for one of the largest and best-known private companies in the motor retailing industry, with showrooms across the North East, North West and Yorkshire.

"Where Optex detectors have been installed at dealerships, the number of incidents has been greatly reduced," he says. "It seems that thieves target sites that have cameras, but not those that have detectors as well. Because of their proven reliability, the only detectors I now specify are from the Optex Redwall range."

Nigel Hackett, Sales Director for Optex Europe concludes: "Redwave detectors are one of the best ways to protect forecourts and exposed sites from crime. Security at all car showrooms is paramount, with theft and vandalism the major concerns. Our detectors are clearly working well to prevent costly damage to the vehicles and the impact it would have on their business."
