Mobile data protection partnership for the UK

Bell Micro : 04 February, 2009  (Company News)
Bell Micro and Virtuity join forces to provide the UK market with BackStopp sales and support for securing sensitive data on mobile devices
The Security division of Bell Micro has signed a UK exclusive vendor partnership agreement with Virtuity to support channel sales of the BackStopp software and service, delivering a new level of security for 'at risk' data on portable devices.

When a BackStopp protected device is reported lost or stolen by the owner, Virtuity is able to locate the device and then delete all sensitive data on the device to US military standards in as little as 180 seconds. BackStopp then generates a comprehensive report of any data accessed, confirms the data it has deleted, and then sends the report to the Virtuity hosting centre. If a webcam is available it will even photograph the culprit and include it in the report. As a final measure, the service will render a laptop's operating system completely useless.

"If the national press taught us just one thing last year, it would be the importance of securing data on the move," said Steve Browell, General Manager, Security Division at Bell Micro. "Protecting data and bringing in encryption for data at rest and in transit, whether on PDA or especially on laptops is a driving need in modern business. Virtuity's BackStopp is one of the most important steps towards delivering on the utopian ideal whereby no matter where personal data ends up, its location is known and its integrity is assured."

By partnering with Virtuity, Bell Micro fulfils on its promise to put IT security at the core of its value proposition, ensuring that security is embedded into every mainstream business opportunity. If a business provides laptops or PDAs to staff, then BackStopp should be an automatic valued-added sale by the reseller managing the deal. Simple and quick to install, BackStopp complements anti-virus, personal firewall, encryption and remote access solutions. As a 24/7 'cloud service' BackStopp also opens doors to ongoing support and customer engagement opportunities.

Uniting BackStopp with Bell Micro's other end point vendor offerings and enterprise level online data backup & restore solutions will enable resellers to build a comprehensive end-point and data loss prevention (DLP) offering to truly differentiate in the market.

"Partnering with Bell Micro marks a tremendous opportunity to bring BackStopp to a wider market that needs a prompt and robust response to portable data loss whether it be accidental or deliberate," said David Brooker, Managing Director at Virtuity. "The business message is simple - locate, delete, report and destroy and this resonates deeply with Bell Micro's intent to ensure that businesses need no longer be concerned about loss of reputation or profitability if their security is ever breached."

"BackStopp is the ultimate peace of mind technology in your data loss prevention goals," added Browell. "You will most likely never see your device again, but you know that sensitive business and personal data will never be seen or distributed by other parties."
