Metalmidi Protection For Mothballed UK Hospital

RapidVu : 11 October, 2010  (Application Story)
The Pennine NHS Trust in England has selected Metalmidi rugged external dome cameras from RapidVu to provide round the clock protection for disused hospital facilities
When the Pennine NHS Trust needed protection for a heritage hospital site they planned to mothball for the future, they turned to RapidVu, the intelligent rapid deployment CCTV surveillance specialist - with a brief to supply a cost effective package to secure the site and grounds. Woods Hospital in Glossop, is a Victorian heritage site and given its status, RaipdVU recommended their Metalmidi system as the perfect cure. As an external, fully functional PTZ camera, Metalmidi is the best in CCTV security and two cameras are now providing the hospital with round the clock intensive CCTV care.

As a ruggedised, directional camera, the Metalmidi range is perfect for situations where the security needs to be tough and effective, yet subtle and understated. Metalmidi is multi-directional with infrared capability, in this case two cameras were enough to cover both the hospital and its immediate grounds.

With the dark nights approaching, once the decision was taken to mothball Woods Hospital, it was essential to specify a security system that could be set up immediately at low cost, with high effectiveness and with low light capability as standard, no matter what the conditions, Metalmidi monitoring is the obvious choice.

'Metalmidi is perfect for projects like Woods Hospital,' said RapidVu managing director Steve Reece. 'The flexibility of the system means we had it up and running at the hospital immediately; and given its portability and stand alone features, Metalmidi does not require any work or installation on the building itself - essential on a listed building such as this. A project of this nature serves to further demonstrate the broad range of applications which the system can be used for. It makes a change from its more traditional role in assisting the police and local authorities in the realm of urban protection. Metalmidi will ensure Woods Hospital retains a clean bill of health until it is needed once more.'

Headquartered in Manchester, RapidVu is already established as a key player in the supply of high performance CCTV systems and its solutions are ideal for mobile applications. Small, light, portable and flexible, RapidVu has established itself as the perfect solution for heritage locations such as Woods Hospital, where it is problematic to specify more traditional forms of CCTV; it is attracting interest from a wide customer base, including police, local authorities and anti-social behaviour (ASBO) teams, as well as from high profile individuals who need the reassurance and security that RapidVu products provide.

Built in 1887, Woods Hospital is a listed building in Glossop, gifted to the community by the Woods family and opened in 1889 at a cost of £6,986, 11 shillings and 10 pence - in old money! With the availability of more modern facilities in nearby Manchester and Sheffield, the hospital with its Victorian building is not an immediate priority. With money set to be very tight for the public sector for the foreseeable future, it was decided to mothball the site and seek a cost effective security system to ensure its protection - enter
RapidVu.

The NHS considered random security patrols, but quickly decided they needed a round the clock solution, that would be vandal proof, capable of operating effectively at night and ideally a wireless solution that could operate on a mobile network at an affordable price. The IP (internet protocol) version is a distinct advantage to many clients.

The great strength of RapidVu's Metalmidi system lies in enabling users to increase their surveillance resources while actually reducing costs. The unique RapidVu technology solution meets all the site's requirements, rugged, sensitive to the architectural features of the site and with fully directional infra red lighting. The latest cutting edge technology like Video Analytics is available to track the movement of people (RapidVu Track and Trace) and will ensure the building is preserved intact for future use.

'Metalmidi is so flexible, it can be up and running in any environment very fast and is perfect for key heritage sites such as this,' explained Steve. 'The fabric of the building remains an asset and has both a monetary and intrinsic value. It is a fantastic Victorian building and we are delighted to be helping to preserve it for the both the NHS and generations to come.'
