Mail delivery company uses SmoothWall for web and e-mail filtering

Smoothwall : 17 November, 2009  (Application Story)
Guardian web filter from SmoothWall is providing protection to UK Mail's internet and e-mail services
Internet security specialists SmoothWall have announced that their Guardian web filter is safeguarding Internet and email access for express delivery company, UK Mail. Formerly known as Business Post, the organisation is best known for its mail, parcel, pallet, courier and logistics services, and now has a growing online operation through iMail and iConsign.

UK Mail has a national network of more than 50 sites and 3,500 vehicles that support its low-cost delivery options. Networked via a LAN and WAN, SmoothWall's Network Guardian is administered from a data centre in Birmingham

Simon Holloway, IT Analyst at UK Mail explains, "The good health of our Internet and email systems is critical to the central running of our organisation. We are using SmoothWall software as a spam filter and to moderate employees' web access; weeding out any unsuitable content. This includes blocking undesirable web sites and more commonly, alerting us to instances where unsuspecting employees have been directed to a malicious URL. It allows us to investigate site authenticity, and potentially 'white list' genuinely useful destinations. That said, we've hardly had to configure the SmoothWall system since installation as its default settings have suited us very well."

Tom Newton, Product Manager at SmoothWall added, "Guardian offers UK Mail a uniquely accurate filtering solution because it uses Dynamic Content Analysis to screen web sites for unsuitable and malicious content. We are proud to have them as customers and delighted that Guardian is helping to ensure their employees stick to the 'letter' of the AUP and help them to 'stamp' out web abuse"

UK Mail also has a dedicated help desk in Slough that supports several bespoke applications, developed by their in-house technical team. The Company also uses third party applications iMail and iConsign; the online booking facilities for mail and parcels that have fully integrated track and trace features for the real time location of items.
