Law enforcement training program on Identity Theft

LifeLock : 02 June, 2009  (Application Story)
LifeLock joins FBI development body to create Identity Theft Summit series with the purpose of informing law enforcement officials about the issues of identity theft
While the number of reported identity theft cases to the Federal Trade Commission continues to climb, law enforcement officials struggle to solve cases left in the wake of criminals taking over identities and racking up debt, ruining credit and financially tarnishing good names. A partnership between the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association (FBI-LEEDA), a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation and LifeLock has created a series of Identity Theft Summits bringing law enforcement officials together to share information on identity theft trends.

"By coming together as a law enforcement community, we have the ability to tackle this rapidly growing crime head on," said Tom Stone, Executive Director of the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association. "These summits are just the beginning. By joining together and opening avenues of communication, we gain the ability to share effective policing strategies and connect identity theft cases from several cities and states to ensure that these criminals get the punishments they deserve."

To date, FBI-LEEDA and LifeLock have hosted seven Identity Theft Summits, reaching nearly 1,000 key law enforcement officials in Arizona, South Carolina, Mississippi, Texas, Nevada, Georgia and Maryland. LifeLock uses information gathered at these Summits to serve as the voice of the industry to educate and empower consumers as well as update elected officials on the issues facing those fighting the crime on the front lines. LifeLock and FBI-LEEDA offer free summits on identity theft throughout the United States.

"There is a tremendous value in hearing new trends and sharing information," said Captain Debra Schmidt of Harris County Sheriff's Office in Houston, Texas. "I'm grateful that LifeLock saw the importance of bringing the law enforcement community together, strengthening our law enforcement partnerships in the fight against the epidemic of identity theft."

Law enforcement agencies interested in additional information or in hosting an Identity Theft Summit can contact the LifeLock Public Affairs Team.
