Lack of action on offender list leaves Britain at risk.

SafeBoot : 20 February, 2008  (Technical Article)
Safeboot comments on the lack of action taken on a disk supplied by Holland concerning the criminal activities of recent immigrants.
Disks containing details of serious offenders on the run from the Netherlands have been mislaid for over a year, giving criminals the opportunity to commit further crimes in the UK.

Kim Camman, product development manager at mobile device encryption specialist SafeBoot, a McAfee company comments:

"This is the latest in a long list of missing disks and reinforces the immediate need for an overhaul of the government's security and data transportation methods. To allow a disk containing such important information get lost in the system is unforgivable. The information on these disks is vital for the protection of UK citizens and aggressive steps need to be taken to ensure this problem is stopped once and for all.

"The disk has been missing for over a year and one needs to question why this has only been raised with the Home Office now? Strict systems and policies should be put in place to protect citizens and ensure the government does not make the same mistake again! To allow a whole year to pass before raising the matter is ludicrous and reporting policies must be implemented. Proactive measures must be taken to mitigate future risks.

"Encryption is the obvious way to alleviate risks to data on mobile devices or in transit. Organisations can transparently deploy technologies to ensure that data is always encrypted and that end-point security is maintained."
