Kaba locking systems in use at new custodial units

Kaba Ltd : 13 March, 2009  (Application Story)
Rubix Solutions have used Kaba secure locking systems in their modular buildings for use as court cells, immigration holding units and custodial blocks
Rubix Solutions are dedicated to designs to assist in delivering sustainable, environmentally friendly and innovative construction concepts using modular buildings. These builds are highly secure and unique in design, assembled off site and delivered on location to form part of the relatively quick construction process.

Due the majority of the work being completed off site, this allows for a superior factory finish, a quick build when the site becomes available, reduces noise & land pollution and results in less construction workers on site.

Rubix build secure units suitable for custodial blocks, immigration holding units, police cells and holding cells at courts and events. Kaba was recently invited to their HQ in Glasgow, Scotland, to discuss how we could assist in securing a 60 unit custodial block with the capabilities to house 120 prisoners.

Kaba's Director of Safe & Container Locks, Clive Baker, presented the unique Kaba Prison Lock which has a patented Convar system, allowing for quick key change in the event of lost, stolen or key compromise.

All parts are made of stainless or zinc-plated steel and each lock incorporates a latch, bolt and mechanical safeguard against removal / dismantling. The bolt has an integrated permanent magnet to form the frame switch contact and provides a privacy lock facility and lock bolt indicator.

The prison blocks are designed for maximum security which is why Kaba was ultimately awarded the contract to secure all Rubix custodial builds. The Kaba Prison locks are pre-adjusted for fitting with a standard commercial profile cylinder for inmate ingress and egress (latch activation). The latch can also be activated with the double-bit key (secured change) and an additional auxiliary latch prevents the latch being pressed back when the door is closed. Kaba quattro pluS Euro Profile anti ligature cylinders are fitted to the inside of the cells affording the inmate's privacy and ensuring no unauthorised access from other inmates. However, the Prison Guards can over-ride this facility at any time should the need arise.

Kaba quattro pluS is a robust, reversible key system for clients who need to secure and control persons / equipment in some of the most remote and demanding environments. This system has a worldwide patent until 2021 and designed for applications where security, durability and strict key control are paramount.

Rubix Solutions Managing Director, AllanWallace commented, "We chose Kaba as we found they have quick response times and very efficient customer service as well as being one of the foremost engineers and developers of security controlled access systems in the world. Key to Rubix opting for the Kaba secure locks was both the patented convar system' and the 'secure changeable key system' which is ideal for our off-site construction process as it allows us to fit the lock during production of our cell with a master key then on delivery we can quickly change the key for the security of our end clients.

We preferred the unique security and cost effectiveness of the secure changeable key system rather than the current costly conventional key change process in the event of a key being lost or compromised".

This solution is unique in the UK and certainly gives Rubix Secure Units with Kaba Prison lock and quattro pluS system integration a distinct market advantage over standard builds and locks.
