Iron Mountain Looks To GreenRoad To Improve Fleet Safety

Greenroad Technologies : 11 February, 2011  (Application Story)
Reduction in fuel consumption, driver risk and accidents during trial has resulted in Iron Mountain taking GreenRoad service for its fleet of vehicles in the UK and Ireland with possible future expansion into international territories
GreenRoad has announced that Iron Mountain has signed a contract to deploy GreenRoad’s service across its entire fleet in the UK and Ireland following a pilot programme last year that delivered a 77% reduction in driver risk and 93% cut in crashes.

GreenRoad’s service will go live in February 2011 in 450 Iron Mountain HGVs and LCVs at 30 UK depots and will be used by 500 plus drivers. The deployment will be in partnership with Zurich, one of GreenRoad’s insurance partners, who will gain insight into Iron Mountain’s fleet risk. GreenRoad’s service may also be expanded to Iron Mountain fleets on the continent next year.

A pilot project where 32 drivers used GreenRoad’s service resulted in fuel consumption dropping 14%; an 80% reduction in risky manoeuvres; and a 93% reduction in crashes compared to the previous year. While using GreenRoad’s service over a ten-month period in 2010 the company submitted just three minor insurance claims. Iron Mountain drivers performed so well that GreenRoad created a new ultra-low risk category of blue drivers as a subset of its green drivers.

Iron Mountain first signed up for a trial of GreenRoad’s service through Transport for London (TfL)'s Freight Operators Recognition Scheme (FORS). FORS is an industry-led membership programme that offers practical advice and guidance to freight operators to help them drive down costs, become safer and more environmentally-focused. To encourage safer driving, TfL offers GreenRoad’s service to all members for free for the first three months.

“The results of this initiative speak for themselves. Our senior driver trainer, Ray Jervis, set an incredibly tough target safety score of 10 for the pilot but our drivers have risen to the challenge and are consistently below ten,” said Rory Morgan, Iron Mountain National logistics general manager. “As well as improving safety GreenRoad also helps with our mandate to reduce fuel consumption. We complement GreenRoad’s service with intensive driver training, fuel-saving technology and fleet management software all of which has resulted in a phenomenal 14% fuel savings. This was recognised by GreenFleet who recently gave us their Large Private Sector Fleet of the Year award.”

Although Iron Mountain has already achieved 14% fuel savings the company plans to increase this number by using GreenRoad’s new idling solution. Customers typically see 2 – 5% drop in fuel consumption with the idling feature. The idling management capability quickly identifies specific drivers, vehicles, or trips that negatively impact fuel performance. It identifies idling activities that are exceptions to company policy, based on client-defined policy thresholds, applying sophisticated filtering to the unavoidable idling that occurs at traffic lights and junctions.

Iron Mountain will also be the first UK fleet to use GreenRoad’s new optional ‘speed by speed zone’ feature across its entire fleet to highlight any speed violations by drivers .

Zurich, one of the world’s largest fleet insurers, recently partnered with GreenRoad on its new, global integrated fleet risk management solution, Zurich Fleet Intelligence (ZFI). Zurich aims to help its customers like Iron Mountain reduce their collision claims rate and insurance premiums by using GreenRoad’s intelligence to gain new understanding about risk and safety levels leading to more effective risk management strategies.

Iron Mountain’s fleet of 450 vehicles consists of 290 Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) and the rest are various types of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) including articulated and specialised vehicles.

GreenRoad provides the most effective, proactive approach to smarter and safer driving. Because driving decisions are responsible for 90% of all accidents and up to 33% of fuel spend, the only way to truly reduce risk and improve efficiency is by focusing on driver decision-making.

GreenRoad 360 provides drivers and fleet managers with real-time, comprehensive feedback, online reporting, analysis and coaching on their abilities, manoeuvres and patterns. As a result, GreenRoad 360 positively impacts both conscious and unconscious driving behaviour – the key to creating more fuel-efficient and safer drivers. A typical GreenRoad customer sees up to a 10% reduction in fuel-consumption and emissions as well as a 50% reduction on crash costs.
