Irish Housing Service Makes Use of Rugged Table PC Equipment

Motion Computing : 19 October, 2010  (Application Story)
Motion Computing is supplying its Motion F5 rugged tablet PC to meet the demanding requirements of the Northern Ireland Federation of Housing Associations for field use
Motion Computing has announced its tablet PCs are playing a key role in Northern Ireland's housing services. The Northern Ireland Federation of Housing Associations (NIFHA) relies on Motion F5s for surveying, reporting and management processes.

The NIFHA is a voluntary organisation that actively works to benefit the community by providing affordable accommodation and related housing services to those in greatest housing need. Its members manage approximately 90,000 units of accommodation, which equates to a quarter of all social housing in Northern Ireland. Since 1998, the NIFHA has been responsible for virtually all new homes built in Northern Ireland.

The biggest challenges facing the NIFHA is to provide enough social housing in the specific areas where it is needed, provide housing management services which satisfy rising tenant expectations while still meeting the demanding efficiency targets set by the government, in addition to making housing association homes and neighbourhoods more environmentally sustainable. To help manage the intensive reporting involved in this process, NIFHA surveyors needed a highly mobile and ruggedised technology solution for managing the portfolio of potential and existing properties in the field.

The NIFHA chose the Motion F5 for its power, portability and durability. Twenty-Five tablets were deployed to improve the accommodation management process. The lightweight design, robust ergonomics and bright outdoor viewable screen made the Motion F5 the perfect alternative to pen and paper. Instant benefits included an increased number of property inspections, the electronic data capture of property details, and expedited sharing of property data between members.

NIFHA surveyors can now update property information and add notes by simply writing on Motion F5s, saving huge amounts of time and resources compared to using pen and paper. In addition, the integrated digital cameras on the Motion F5s are used to capture images to further improve reporting.

The Motion F5 has met the challenges of this large-scale task because it is a rugged, powerful mobile computer that includes natural pen/speech input along with Motion's View Anywhere Display and Gorilla glass for durable and viewable outdoor viewing. A significant reduction in building deficiencies identified during inspections is testament to the overall effectiveness of the NIFHA's improved reporting and management processes. As a result, the Motion F5 has become the cornerstone of the NIFHA's surveying program.

The Motion F5 is tailored to mobile professionals across vertical industries such as construction and field service. The tablet is fully rugged yet lightweight, making it the ideal solution for workers who compute while walking or standing. Deployed across organisations worldwide, the Motion F5 is proven to enhance documentation, improve collaboration and reduce process latencies.

Tested to withstand even the harshest working environments, the Motion F5 meets MIL-STD-810G and IP-54 standards. Drop tested on 26 sides and fully sealed against dust and moisture, the Motion F5 is designed to withstand bumps, drops, rain or other conditions that can damage commercial-grade computing solutions. Additionally, the Motion F5 is enterprise-ready. Utilising either the Windows 7 or Windows XP operating system, the Motion F5 fits seamlessly into enterprise environments, reducing the burden on IT and enabling mobile workers to manage the same applications available to office-based employees.
