IP Security and communications network for fishing vessel

Zenitel : 02 September, 2009  (Application Story)
Advanced trawler makes use of communication system using IP technology from Zenitel Marine for all its security systems including cameras and control room
IP Security and communications network for fishing vessel
Zenitel Marine, a supplier of integrated communication solutions for the marine market, announces one of the largest Vingtor ACM Advanced Integrated IP based systems delivered in 2008 was to Hvalnes P/F and their newest vessel F/V Nordborg of the Faroe Islands. Delivered by Tórshavn-based marine electronics firm Vikmar, the 83.5m long purse seiner/pelagic trawler is claimed to be one of the most advanced fishing vessels in the world.

Word has already spread about the vessel's vast holding and freezing capacities, (RSW hold capacity of 1.230m3 and two freezing holds optimised for pallets with a capacity of 2,500m3 respectively) however little has been revealed about the onboard electronics. The 83.5m long vessel has been fitted with the most modern electronics, communication and fish-finding equipment available today - and that equipment includes a Vingtor communication system using digital communication networks. Choosing to integrate communications and data this way allows advantages to be made of SIP and Web 2.0 services. For example, the system connects to many other security systems like radio, Public Address, telephony, camera's and control rooms or the marine bridge.

Using IP technology and Vingtor's latest ACM Advanced Integrated solution, Nordborg benefits from a complete and integrated system for Communication, Data, Safety and Entertainment onboard. With this system, reduced cost in infrastructure, more efficient operation, improved user experience and the confidence of type approved and certified systems are achieved.

The Vingtor ACM Advanced Integrated system also utilizes a new modular building practice which allows customers to select from a wide set of function modules to provide function and capacity according to specific need (from 30 to over 1,000 users). In Nordborg's case, Zenitel Marine supplied a complete and integrated Vingtor UHF radio system into a 19' ACM Advanced data rack made for marine environments. This is integrated to a number of ACM E26 modules, PA modules, Zenitel's SatTV and TV distribution solution, Data switches and UHF paging. The delivery was made possible through a co-operation with Zenitel Wireless Solutions Norway, a partner of Motorola providing radio communication solutions to professional users, often in combination with Vingtor and Stentofon product lines.

Another significant offering to the marine industry is how Vingtor can provide communication, data and safety using an 'all in one cable' solution. Using this advanced wiring and patch solution Nordborg and others see a significant reduction in cabling infrastructure as a single, type approved CAT7 cable can be used as the backbone for all communication devices: telephone (analogue or IP), general alarm, public address, internet access and IP TV to a cabin.

But it's not only the most state-of-the-art vessels that are discovering the benefits of an Advanced Integrated IP based system. Vingtor and Vikmar are seeing a growing number of older vessels looking to take advantage of IP, integrate their systems and use a single communication network. Since installation can occur on existing networks, IP decreases the total cost of ownership and customers can mix new generation IP stations and services with traditional ones, thereby capitalizing on existing equipment and competences. This unique offering is referred to as 'backwards compatibility'.

Vingtor continues to offer analogue systems which offer more basic onboard communication requirements in a cost effective way, but it's the Advanced Integrated systems which are today recognised for featuring the latest developments like IP telephony, Web management and IP switching. IP DECT base stations may also be directly connected offering an extremely resourceful solution for deploying a wireless network onboard, making it more flexible and cheaper to maintain and expand systems.

Operating mainly on the fishing grounds around the Faroe Island, the North Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, Nordborg has discovered the advantages of using an Integrated Data and Communication System that unites and strengthens a vessel's safety system by offering excellent on-board communication.
