IP addressable PTZ surveillance on display at BETT 2010

IP addressable surveillance and biometric time and attendance for education are being demonstrated at BETT 2010 in January based on case study at East London school
IP addressable PTZ surveillance on display at BETT 2010
Security Systems Technology (SST) are demonstrating biometric time & attendance solutions and IP-addressable CCTV surveillance at the BETT 2010 education trade show in Olympia, London, from 13-16 January. The exhibition is the world's largest educational technology fair.

SST's recent education work includes an IP-addressable solution with over 100 cameras at Brampton Manor School in east London and a staff time & attendance project at The West Bridgford School in Nottingham. The installer has also protected staff and students using both static and moveable (PTZ) surveillance cameras at Windmill Hill on the Sussex Downs, a facility run by educational tour and adventure holiday specialist PGL.

In addition to working with major IP camera and video management suppliers such as Axis Communications and Milestone Systems, SST exploit RFID and Video Analytics to provide solutions that are often tailor-made to a client's requirements. Time & attendance techniques benefit from exceptionally stable biometrics that allow staff and students to clock in and out by placing their hand on a compact scanner. As the system reads the dimensions of the hand from the top rather than the 'fingerprint' side, data protection issues are minimised. SST's access control tools include swipe cards, proximity tokens and PIN keypads. The company also offers ParentCall, an online communication service that connects schools to parents as well as schools to staff members. ParentCall uses email, SMS and Text to Voice.

Video analytics, including people counting as deployed by SST, has become a valuable tool for university and school facilities managers. Alarm-based installations are able to continuously monitor CCTV images throughout a school or college, creating an alert if certain patterns of behaviour occur such as large groups gathering in an area or intrusion into a protected zone. Facility managers at educational sites will immediately recognise the potential applications of such scene analysis.

BETT is the world's largest educational technology exhibition. A feature of the 2010 event will be virtual learning environments (VLEs) in which pupil assessment and administration of student groups are achieved through both face-to-face classroom activity and Internet activity. The web-based methods include blogs, RSS and 3D virtual learning spaces. In so far as they unite traditional techniques with multimedia and web pages, VLEs mirror the way in which SST has combined analogue and IP-addressable surveillance at recent school installations.

The company's CCTV solutions not only provide a visual deterrent to intruders but also give facility managers real-time notification when an incident occurs both on-site and to remote locations through Web browser monitoring. Cameras can range from standard analogue equipment to thermal imaging or MegaPixel IP units.
