Internet threat protection for Blinds manufacturer

Network Box : 25 August, 2008  (Application Story)
Unified threat management product from Network Box to provide network and mobile IT protection to Hillarys Blinds
Hillarys Blinds has chosen managed security company Network Box to protect it from all online threats. The company will be using Network Box's unified threat management (UTM) product, which will secure the organisation's network, including its workforce of mobile sales advisors that use mobile point-of-sales terminals.

The internet and email play a fundamental role in the day-to-day running of Hillarys Blinds. Phil Squire, Senior System Administrator, Hillarys Blinds, explains: "We have 800 part-time sales advisors that use Windows-enabled, mobile point-of-sales terminals which allow them to process an order in the customer's home via a 3G network. These devices authorise debit and credit card payments, sending the transaction in real time via an internet connection to our order processing team at our head office. Without these mobile terminals, an order could take up to three days to process, so it's absolutely vital that these devices are secure and remain online at all times."

Previously, Hillarys Blinds was using a dedicated hardware firewall, email filter and web proxy server but found managing multiple technologies to be a burden. "Using three separate security solutions meant that we incurred not just considerable financial costs, but also we were paying a high price from an administration perspective. The amount of resources required needed to maintain them became a big overhead in itself."

Although Hillarys Blinds' email gateway system was effective at trapping malware-laden message attachments, its performance at filtering spam was unsatisfactory. "As the volume of spam we were receiving continued to grow, we inevitably began getting complaints from frustrated employees. Some staff in particular were being flooded with spam - those with email addresses in the public domain, for example. Also, these junk emails also started to have a seriously impact on the performance of our system."

Hillarys Blinds' ICT management team decided to outsource the organisation's security to a managed UTM service provider and chose Network Box after reviewing several other providers. "We were very impressed by the real-time updates of its scanning engine and its comprehensive data monitoring capabilities. Network Box also allows us to retain control and visibility of our network and communications systems" says Squire.

Squire is in little doubt that Network Box will prove to be a resounding success. "Because threats evolve so quickly it was difficult to say for certain that prior to Network Box we were protected from the very latest threats. This isn't the case now. Network Bo x uses Push technology so no matter what new threats appear, we know that we're always protected, 24/7, which gives us invaluable peace of mind."
