Internal network traffic protection from malicious traffic

Stonesoft Networks : 24 June, 2008  (New Product)
Intrusion Prevention from Stonesoft provides protection for corporate networks from malicious code
Stonesoft has introduced the new StoneGate IPS 4.3 for protecting internal networks and operating systems from malicious traffic. The revolutionary serial clustering technology employed in new StoneGate appliances delivers superior scalability and increases IPS throughput by up to 60 percent.

"A typical scenario where our StoneGate IPS stands out for its flexibility and scalability is during the use of etherchannels between switches on internal trunk networks. When grouping physical links, to create one logical Ethernet link to provide fault-tolerance and high speeds, security is often compromised because firewalls cannot operate between etherchannel links. StoneGate IPS is an ideal solution for such locations. It can be installed between etherchannel links to provide the same access control functionalities and level of security as a firewall", said Klaus Majewski, VP of marketing at Stonesoft.

In addition to advanced intrusion detection and prevention functionalities, the StoneGate IPS provides access control features, which allows it to be used as a combined firewall and intrusion prevention appliance. Operating transparently to other network devices, it can be used flexibly anywhere in the internal network, even on trunk lines between switches.

While trunk lines have to manage heavy traffic loads, the performance of security systems has to be scalable to keep up. Installed in a series, StoneGate IPS appliances will scale the performance up to 60% with each new cluster node. With 10 Gbps network interfaces, StoneGate IPS-6100G1 the newest member of the StoneGate high-end appliances, can inspect the traffic in modern 10 Gbps environments.

While migration to the new IPv6 protocol is still progressing at a relatively slow pace, it is becoming increasingly crucial in internal networks. For example, Microsoft Vista automatically attempts to use IPv6 addresses, whenever these are available. Consequently, full internal network protection is only achieved if the intrusion prevention system can inspect IPv6 traffic and its encapsulated formats over IPv4 and IPv6, like StoneGate IPS solution does.
