Intelligent mobile VPN order from Saukville Police

Columbitech : 25 February, 2009  (Application Story)
Mobile VPN from Columitech enables field officers in Wisconsin police to gain secure remote wireless access to central computing resources
Columbitech has announced that the Saukville Police Department in southeast Wisconsin chose Columbitech for a citywide implementation of its intelligent mobile VPN. Columbitech's security solution now allows Saukville police officers to obtain fast, secure and uninterrupted access to remote data from laptops while working in the field. This eliminates time spent in the office filling out paperwork, and significantly improves the overall efficiency and response time of the police department.

Prior to using Columbitech, the Saukville Police Department used a radio-based system which provided a slow connection and very limited access to applications and data. Police officers now experience a persistent connection to mission-critical applications such as, Traffic and Criminal Software (TraCS), Titan Public Safety Solutions (TiPSS) as well as Internet and e-mail. This allows the officers immediate access to identification and incident records while on duty and in the field rather than waiting to return to their desk.

"We are very pleased with the fast results achieved using Columbitech's mobile VPN. It is important that we are able to access critical information quickly and we were not achieving this with our past solution, or the other solutions we considered," said Bill Meloy, police chief of Saukville Police Department. "Columbitech's mobile VPN is a high quality, yet cost-efficient solution which addresses all of our needs, from session persistence to strong security authentication and improved productivity."

Columbitech's partner and integrator, DCS Netlink, worked with Columbitech and the Saukville Police Department in order to complete installation of the mobile VPN. Steve Newman, network administrator from DCS Netlink, who installed the Columbitech solution as part of its LEAP (Law Enforcement Application Program) police data offering, said, "The Columbitech Mobile VPN fit perfectly with Saukville's goal to implement the simplest, best performing solution in the squad cars. Its software was the fastest, most efficient when running on the server and was capable of sharing the server with other applications. This is a critical feature as most other VPNs require dedicated hardware resulting in higher costs - which is not practical for smaller organizations with limited resources."

The Saukville Police Department selected Columbitech for its ability to meet future security requirements, including two-factor authentication as well as military-grade FIPS 140-2 certification. This ensures that confidential data from applications and police records remains secure with strong encryption and authentication features.

"Remote access is a key component in maintaining and improving public safety. Our solution is enabling the Saukville Police Department to become much more effective as a workforce and we are certain that it will strengthen the community's safety as a whole," said Asa Holmstrom, president of Columbitech. "Working with the Saukville Police Department further solidifies our interest and strong position within the public safety market."
