Intelligent content protection extension.

Forcepoint : 04 January, 2008  (New Product)
Open endpoint initiative provides collaborative endpoint protection using technologies from Websense and Lumension Security.
Websense has unveiled a preview of its data loss prevention (DLP) solution for the endpoint and announced a new technology partnership designed to give customers more choice, flexibility and interoperability in their security deployments on endpoints, end-user devices such as laptops or printers that connect to the corporate network.

Websense is helping customers bolster content protection by launching an Open Endpoint Initiative that ensures easy integration of its industry-leading DLP solution - Websense Content Protection Suite - with other endpoint security offerings. As part of the initiative, Websense announced a new partnership with Lumension Security, a leader in security management, providing unified protection and control over enterprise endpoints. Additionally, Websense is extending the capabilities of the network-based Content Protection Suite to the endpoint and today unveiled a preview of the upcoming product, which is the only endpoint DLP product to feature local discovery and content-based protection.

Since entering into the DLP market with the acquisition of PortAuthority in January 2007, Websense has continued to advance DLP technology - first by combining content and user awareness with Web intelligence, and now with the upcoming Content Protection Suite endpoint solution. As a result of these technology advancements and the Open Endpoint Initiative, Websense will become the only DLP provider giving customers the flexibility to deploy a single, comprehensive DLP solution from the network to the endpoint, while also having the ability to easily integrate it with other security solutions if desired.

"DLP usually starts on the network because that's the most cost-effective way to get the broadest coverage," said Rich Mogull, independent consultant and founder, Securosis. "However, in the long-term, users will need both network and endpoint capabilities for a complete content protection solution. Adding an endpoint agent to a DLP solution not only gives the ability to discover stored content, but to potentially protect systems no longer on the network or even protect data as it's being actively used."

Websense first led the charge at the endpoint by partnering with device control vendors in 2006 to combine Websense's content awareness, control and incident management with device and port control capabilities through an integrated solution that is currently available. Websense's commitment to its open architecture and technology partner ecosystem is furthered by the new partnership with Lumension to address data loss at the endpoint through removable media and storage. The integration enables joint customers to leverage Websense content awareness and data identification for preventing the misuse of data - such as blocking employees from copying sensitive data to media devices like USB drives or DVDs. It will also include full reporting and incident management across both product lines.

"Combining our industry leading Sanctuary Device Control and Websense data awareness will provide joint customers significant value by enabling them to create policies protecting their sensitive data by limiting the ability to copy it to removable media devices and storage," said Mike Wittig, president and CTO, Lumension. "Websense's open framework coupled with Lumension's policy enforcement truly empowers customers with the choice and flexibility to extend their existing endpoint security investments and better protect the lifeblood of their business - content."

Making use of the core DLP technologies of the Websense Content Protection Suite with the endpoint application intelligence of Websense Client Policy Manager, the Content Protection Suite endpoint solution will provide local analysis to discover, monitor and protect data across millions of categorized applications - whether the endpoint is inside the network or remote. Local discovery and contextual awareness of content enable security administrators to enforce security policies based upon the user, the content itself, the application (such as instant messaging) or by removable media usage.

Unlike device control offerings that manage devices and ports, the Content Protection Suite endpoint focuses on controlling the data rather than the peripheral device or media. By focusing on the data itself, Websense protects content across the broadest array of communication channels (such as Instant Messaging and Peer-2-Peer media), data storage and burning applications, USB and Firewire applications (such as printing and removable media). Websense provides all this in a single suite with unified policy management, incident management and reporting, for content protection across all enterprise channels and applications - on and off the network; for data in motion, in use, and at rest.

"Websense's continued enhancements to the Content Protection Suite enables users like us to protect data accurately and efficiently," said Glen Chzras, vice president of technology at Altura Credit Union and Websense customer. "While other vendors offer endpoint technology without a comprehensive network-level DLP solution, Websense started at the network—where most enterprise information lives—and is extending its offering to the endpoint. I know how well the Content Protection Suite safeguards my company's data at the network, and after seeing the preview of the Content Protection Suite endpoint, I am convinced that it will deliver new levels of protection."

Only Websense combines unparalleled knowledge of Internet threats, data loss prevention and sophisticated Web and email filtering to provide users with the most comprehensive product and services portfolio for protection from internal and external threats.

Comprehensive data loss prevention - Websense's award-winning Content Protection Suite software is the only DLP solution to provide content- and context-based policy enforcement to manage who has access to what information, how that information can be used, and where it can be sent, leveraging its knowledge of the Web to prevent data from being transmitted to malicious and/or unintended destinations.

Web security - Exploiting ThreatSeeker technology, which scans more than 600 million Web sites per week searching for malicious code, Websense Web Security Suite software provides unparalleled protection from external, Internet-based threats and enables businesses to take advantage of emerging online business productivity applications with the confidence that security processes are enforced and sensitive data is protected.

Messaging security - The combination of Websense Email Filter and On Demand Services, which scans more than 350 million emails per week for email security threats, provides customers with comprehensive content filtering for continuous messaging protection, reduced risk and improved business continuity.

"The Content Protection Suite is the only DLP solution that provides awareness around users, data, destinations and business communication channels," said Leo Cole, vice president of marketing, Websense. "Such intelligence enables customers to better understand the risks around their data and business practices, while providing the most complete mechanisms for creating and enforcing policies to control who uses what data, where it goes and how. We continue to add value for our customers by extending this level of visibility and protection to endpoint channels and applications, while at the same time delivering more customer choice and flexibility through our integration partnerships."
