Intellectual property seminar held by the Security Institute.

The Security Institute : 04 April, 2008  (Company News)
Seminar focused on intellectual property rights as a commercial tool.
Tuesday 1st April saw the Medway Innovation Centre in Rochester, Kent, host a half day workshop for the Security Institute, the topic of the workshop was Intellectual Property.

Jonathan Exell of Williams Powell Trademark and Patent Attorneys gave a talk and workshop on the different types of intellectual property and all of the legal means available to protect it. The talk covered items ranging from copyright to the patentability of software and hardware used in the security sector and many of us realised we had perhaps missed a trick in the level of protection we had sought for our products. Overall Jonathan explained that IPR protection was a commercial tool and how it could be used successfully in the marketplace. Jonathan's many years of experience made the workshop very engaging imparting anecdotes from his extensive experience that resulted in a very lively question and answer session.

Philomena Lavery Managing Director of the Medway Innovation Centre followed this workshop with a review of commercial means to protect and enhance the IPR of companies operating in the security sector, Philomena ran through developing meaningful customer relationships and the importance of Branding and PR to support and enhance the company reputation. The talk covered several practical commercial activities businesses should undertake to enhance the protection of their Intellectual Property and build successful business relationships with clients. The talk prompted many of us to make mental notes on how to do perhaps improve our business practices.

Requests for copies of the presentations may be made to the Medway Innovation Centre (contact details below). Jim Castle is a Fellow of the Security Institute and Advisory Board Member of the Medway Innovation Centre organised the workshop and was very grateful for the MIC's and Williams Powell's generosity and support.
