Improved laptop user authentication

Secude International : 27 September, 2007  (New Product)
Partnership enables citizen card protection for laptops to supplement pre-boot authentication of Secude Secure Notebook.
Secude and IT Solution in Vienna now have signed a technology partnership. The integration of the IT Solution middleware into Secude secure notebook enables the use of European citizen cards for secure authentication.

Secude secure notebook reliably protects confidential business data on notebooks, desktops, and external mass storage devices from unauthorized third parties. The encryption software encodes the entire hard disk rather than just individual files or folders.

In addition, Secude secure notebook offers Pre-Boot Authentication (PBA) prior to system start. The Linux-based PBA system serves as an extension of the BIOS or boot firmware and guarantees a secure, tamper-proof environment as a trusted authentication layer receiving the user credentials. User Pre-Boot Authentication is achieved either with User ID plus password, with smartcard or security token plus PIN.

By integrating IT Solution's PKCS#11 Module for Linux into Secude secure notebook cards from legally accepted trustcenters can now be used for authentication, too. For a user this means that they can use their citizen card for authentication to the notebook. Amongst the supported cards are the A-Trust cards from ACOS, Giesecke&Devrient and Siemens in Austria, the E-Card from Giesecke&Devrient, the D-Trust cards from Micardo, Siemens Sicrypt, as well as the EstEID Orga Micardo Card for Estonia and the FinEID cards from Setec for Finland.

'The citizen card will drive the security of electronic administration in Europe", says Tristan Kromer, Business Unit Manager of Mobile Security at Secude. "In providing the opportunity to use a citizen card for authentication to notebooks, we have built a bridge from government identity management to private sector use. These dual use cards will provide greater ease of use to customers.'

'Electronic Media become more and more important for our business world and private life', amends Michael Herdy, CEO of IT Solution. 'Unambiguous identification and authentication as well as security by means of encrypted data are absolutely necessary in the digital world today.'
