Identity Theft Summit to be held in Detroit

LifeLock : 08 June, 2009  (Company News)
With identity theft incidents having increased significantly across the United States in 2008, LifeLock is holding a summit on ID theft protection in Detroit in June
More than 8,300 Michigan consumers filed identity theft complaints with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in 2008, an increase of more than 18 percent over the previous year. According to the FTC, Michigan is the 19th highest state reporting identity theft cases, and LifeLock, an industry leader in identity theft protection, will be reaching out to residents of the Detroit metro area on June 11 by hosting an Identity Theft Town Hall meeting at 6 pm.

The FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association (FBI-LEEDA), LifeLock and the Brownstown Police Department are hosting a town hall meeting to educate consumers on the growing threats of identity theft and to define individual points of vulnerability. This free event held in Brownstown, Mich., and serving the greater Detroit area will provide consumers with an opportunity to learn more about the crime, as well as proactive steps consumers can take to help protect themselves. Experts from the National Organization for Victims' Assistance (NOVA) will be on hand to lead discussions about the emotional effects of identity theft and to provide onsite counseling for those individuals who may have fallen victim to the crime.

"Identity theft is constantly taking over innocent victims' lives, and through LifeLock's partnership with the FBI-LEEDA and NOVA, we are all working together to empower consumers to better protect themselves," says LifeLock CEO Todd Davis. "As more and more complaints of identity theft are reported, the most crucial step we can take in this process is educating and preparing consumers."

The town hall meeting is part of a nationwide series being offered under a partnership between FBI-LEEDA and LifeLock, and is being held in conjunction with a free law enforcement summit. The town hall meeting is open to the public and will be held on June 11 from 6 to 7:30 pm at UAW Local 387, 24250 Telegraph Road.
