Identity and Access Management at Florida School District

Courion : 21 April, 2010  (Application Story)
Courion is providing protection to students in large school district in Florida with Access Assurance Suite enabling secure online access control
Courion has announced that Florida's Palm Beach County School District, the 11th largest public school district in the United States, and the fifth largest school district in Florida with 300,000 users, has selected Courion's Access Assurance Suite to automate self-service password management and user provisioning. The District will use Courion's solution to securely manage application access for faculty, staff, students and parents, including the ability to identify users and grant and revoke access in accordance with policy.

"The sheer volume of accounts used in our District requires a solution that allows us to automate processes and ensure all users have appropriate access to the right applications, depending on their role," said Hernando Celada, Director - IT Infrastructure & Security at Palm Beach County's School District. "We selected Courion's Suite for its ability to be deployed rapidly throughout our District, improve the user experience, and support our audit compliance requirements."

Palm Beach County's School District serves over 170,000 students from kindergarten to grade 12. There are approximately 200 sites in the District ranging from schools to other facilities. The system's information technology (IT) staff had been using manual processes to manage user access to various systems, but the large number of students moving into and out of the school system each year, coupled with staff turnover, made those processes untenable. The District needed a solution that could automate the tasks of creating, modifying, and disabling access for students and staff, to reduce the workload on its IT and help desk staff and improve overall security.

"By adding an automated identity and access management solution to their enterprise, Palm Beach County's School District is taking the necessary steps to ensure that everyone has the proper access to systems and that access is disabled from systems automatically when necessary, preventing the possibility of security breaches and streamlining the audit process," said Chris Sullivan, vice president of customer solutions at Courion. "It also allows the district to improve efficiencies by freeing up IT resources that were previously required for manually resetting passwords, and provisioning and de-provisioning thousands of users at a time."

Courion's unique Access Assurance approach to identity, access and compliance management ensures that only the right people have the right access to the right resources and are doing the right things. Access Assurance unifies Access Governance, Access Provisioning and Access Compliance in the most complex, heterogeneous environments. This comprehensive approach increases operational efficiency and transparency, strengthens security, and improves compliance, while delivering the industry's fastest time to value and lowest total cost of ownership.
