IAPP recognition for leadership in privacy protection

International Association Of Privacy Professionals (IAPA) : 11 December, 2008  (Company News)
2008 Privacy Vanguard Award presented to legal professional for leadership in data and privacy protection
The International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), the world's largest organisation representing the privacy profession, has announced that Martin Abrams, executive director, Centre for Information Policy Leadership at Hunton & Williams is the winner of the 2008 IAPP Privacy Vanguard Award.

Abrams has been responsible for driving much of the public policy strategy around privacy and data protection in a career that spans over two decades. Through his Centre for Information Policy Leadership, a privately funded information policy organisation that is housed within the global law firm of Hunton & Williams, Abrams helps private and public sector stakeholders around the world shape their approaches to privacy by reconciling and balancing tensions between business, government and civil society.

The IAPP Privacy Vanguard Award honours the privacy professional who has best demonstrated outstanding leadership, knowledge and creativity in privacy and data protection, whether through spearheading projects or programs that positively impact the privacy profession or through achievements over the course of an entire tenure or career. The IAPP Board of Directors' Executive Committee selects the recipient from a distinguished list of nominees.

"Marty is a major contributor to the privacy profession and to privacy policy matters on a global scale," said Sandra Hughes, IAPP president and global ethics, compliance and privacy executive, Procter & Gamble. "Privacy professionals, regulators and data protection authorities around the world know and respect Marty. I am honoured to recognise his many significant achievements."

Last year's IAPP Privacy Vanguard Award winner, IBM Vice President, Regulatory Policy & Chief Privacy Officer Harriet Pearson, explained, "This award is richly deserved. Marty was a leading privacy professional before the term was coined. As the privacy profession grew rapidly early in the 21st century, Marty's transition to think tank leader enabled him to coach many new to the field on how to meet business goals while respecting society's expectations." Pearson introduced Abrams and presented him with the 2008 IAPP Privacy Vanguard Award during the organisation's Privacy Dinner at the Willard Hotel in Washington, DC.
