Commenting on pronouncements from from HP that the Cloud, “....poses ‘huge’ data security risks, Costas Galonis, managing director of Cloud provider Cirrus Stratus said: “Either the spokesperson from HP who made this statement has no idea what the Cloud is or HP is deliberately scaremongering. The Cloud is the inevitable future for Small to Medium Sized (SME) busineses as well as big corporations. The biggest security risks are from insider threats – people within the organisation who gain unauthorised data or take advantage of lax IT security procedures. In smaller organisations it is often the IT department itself which poses the biggest security threats through the use of weak passwords, lax password security and lack of encryption.”
“By setting the right levels of security, Cloud providers can help their customers mitigate any risk. Good management of cloud technology will in many ways significantly reduce client’s risk. It is all about management of the data and clear communications between the vendor and the customer” said Mr. Galonis
“The HP spokesman says that SMEs, ‘...do not have the resources for an internal dedicated security team..’ but that is exactly why they should consider moving to the Cloud – we can provide that for them. Maybe HP issued their statement not because of the risk to the customer but rather because the Cloud poses a huge risk to HP” said Galonis.
