High precision parabolic mirrors for Japanese manufacturer

Optical Surfaces : 25 July, 2007  (Application Story)
Optical Surfaces has supplied off-axis parabolic mirrors for demanding high precision application involving critical beam focussing in Japan.
Optical Surfaces has delivered, to a leading Japanese manufacturer of analytical and measuring technology, a pair of matching ultra-smooth off-axis parabola supplied in rigid mounts specially designed for the customer.

The mirrors will be critical beam focusing components in a demanding application that also requires fine translational control of the mirrors in multiple axes. Optical Surfaces was selected as the supplier for these mirrors due to its technical excellence, reasonable pricing and a proven record in supplying large ultra-smooth optics in high precision mounts to leading research groups around the world.

While manufactured as two separate stand-alone mirrors of 225mm diameter, 1800mm focal length a close matching tolerance was achieved. Using proprietary production techniques, Optical Surfaces Ltd skilled craftsmen were able to produce the required ultra-smooth matching parabolic mirrors with a surface accuracy of lambda/20 p-v, slope errors of only lambda/18 per cm and excellent surface quality of 20:10 scratch / dig.

To enable the precise focus and movement required of the application the mounts were specially designed for the customer to be particularly rigid and to offer fine translational mirror adjustment in two directions plus tilt in two axes. Prior to despatch the mirrors were pre-adjusted so that the optical axis directions were matched and aligned to a
datum plane built into the mounts.

Optical Surfaces has been producing optical components and systems for more than 40 years and is now accepted as one of Europe's leading manufacturers of high-precision optics. The main workshops and test facilities are deep underground in a series of tunnels excavated in solid chalk where temperature remains constant and vibration is practically non-existent. With such stable conditions testing particularly with long path lengths become quantifiable and reliable. Working with these natural advantages is a highly skilled team of craftsmen with a commitment to excellence in both product quality and customer service.

Optical Surfaces ISO 9001-2000 approved manufacturing facility provides the flexible resources to supply from single specialist requirements to OEM quantities. All high precision optics are provided with a complete quality test assurance report.
