High Definition Imaging For Mexican Jewellery Retailer

Arecont Vision : 27 April, 2012  (Application Story)
A jewellery shop in Mexico has upgraded its old analogue surveillance system to megapixel network cameras for clearer imaging
Arecont Vision’s megapixel IP cameras have proven to be a cost-effective deterrent to criminal activities because high quality images provide more detail for forensic review which can lead to improved suspect identity live and after the fact, and ultimately a safer environment for customers.

Mallor Joyeria, a jewellery shop in Morelia, Michoacán, México, was a constant target of thieves. With the low-quality resolution of the shop's previous video surveillance system, none of the suspects were ever definitively identified or caught. It was clear that a higher quality video surveillance system was needed, and Arecont Vision’s megapixel camera technology provided the solution that Mallor Joyeria needed.

Eight of Arecont Vision’s MegaDome cameras were installed at the jewellery shop, including six specifically positioned to cover jewellery showcases. The system is monitored locally by shop management and can also be monitored remotely via the Internet. As a result of the Arecont Vision megapixel camera installation, shop management reports a lower rate of theft attempts and an increase in security for customers.

“Arecont Vision cameras provide wider views and higher resolution coverage,” said Rodrigo Cervantes, Product Engineering Manager, Sermex, the system integrator that designed and installed the Arecont Vision system. “Greater image clarity translates into better information to be used as evidence and the picture quality and digital zoom capabilities of Arecont Vision’s cameras far exceed the previously used analogue technology.”

Arecont Vision MegaDome cameras enable the jewellery store to gather, analyze and interpret any evidence of theft, which helps them achieve their primary goal of greater security. In addition, better video quality makes it easier to view the way clients and clerks handle jewellery, watches and other highly valued products while they are being showcased.

According to Mr Cervantes, Mallor Joyeria management has expressed confidence in the Arecont Vision system. They are also realising the potential for additional benefits of a higher end video surveillance system. He says, “The new security system will increase the retailer's ROI because customers and employees will feel more secure and that can lead to increased traffic and potential sales. Additionally, it may also lead to a decrease in insurance costs.”

Megapixel imaging represents a significant upgrade in system functionality compared to standard-resolution cameras. The use of fewer megapixel cameras to cover larger areas dramatically decreases costs related to other elements of a system. This advantage plays especially well in the retail environment, where costs are always a consideration. Their use in a small retail environment such as Mallor Joyeria illustrates the flexibility of megapixel solutions and their cost-effectiveness for a wide range of mainstream applications.
