Health Service Data Loss Demonstrates Poor Control Of Portable Storage

Ipswitch : 17 May, 2010  (Technical Article)
Ipswitch is advising those transferring sensitive data to use secure transfer channels rather than using memory sticks as demonstrated by recent data loss from NHS Forth Valley
Ipswitch has issued advice on the transfer of patient data following the loss of a memory stick containing patient data at NHS Forth Valley. Ipswitch is one of the largest and best-known providers of data transfer infrastructure in the world, in use at banks, businesses, government and the military.

"Portable data devices should not be used for transfers of sensitive information for the simple reason that the data on them can be physically appropriated. A formal corporate secure transfer channel is the best way to ensure that data is not lost," explained Ipswitch VP for Global Strategy, and respected former analyst, Frank Kenney.

"The accepted way to move sensitive data is to transfer it, encrypted and online between secure locations using established protocols. However small or large the data transfer, there's no security case for portable memory sticks where patient data is concerned".
