GrIDsure Comments On MoD Data Loss History

Gridsure : 23 July, 2010  (Technical Article)
Software-based authentication vendor questions the effectiveness of hardware only based protection methods for critical information security in light of recent MoD data losses
Following the announcement of the MoD's data losses over the last two years, Stephen Howes, CEO of GrIDsure has made the following comment:

"It is a major concern that so many items containing sensitive data were lost, but the lack of encryption on such a high number of these devices is simply inexcusable. However, even when authentication and encryption systems are put in place to protect information, they are often so cumbersome and difficult to use that staff come up with all manner of inventive ways of circumventing the protection mechanisms. Employees will write passwords down and fail to properly follow security procedures - I've even witnessed situations where staff have cut their smart cards in two so that they can keep them in their laptop without being spotted. So it is becoming increasingly clear that expensive hardware-based solutions are neither effective nor fit for purpose. Instead, easy-to-use software solutions offering comprehensive security at the right price point for today's austerity environment should be investigated more thoroughly by both the public and private sectors alike."
