Gonzalez trial testifies to need for information asset protection

Electronic Verification Systems : 25 September, 2009  (Technical Article)
Electronic Verification Systems comments on the trial of US hacker, Albert Gonzalez and the implications to businesses to protect themselves from wire fraud
Electronic Verification Systems (EVS) president and CEO, Rick Tur, has made a statement regarding the indictment of Albert Gonzalez, the hacker charged last month with committing the largest credit and debit card data breach in US history. The Department of Justice has indicated in a press release, Gonzalez's trial is scheduled to begin this month.

'The scale of Gonzalez's crimes are a perfect example of why businesses need to take an active role in protecting themselves and their customers from fraud,' Tur said earlier today. 'It's critical for any business to have a comprehensive security plan in place to stop this type of criminal activity from effecting them. Red Flag compliance will ensure companies are taking steps to confirm the identity of their clients.'

Gonzalez faces charges of conspiracy and conspiracy to engage in wire fraud. If convicted on both counts, he faces up to 35 years in prison and $500,000 in fines. He is currently in federal custody.
