German airports upgrade to eGates with biometric face recognition

Cognitec Systems joins a consortium of companies led by secunet Security Networks and Bundesdruckerei to commence work on the EasyPASS project, following a recent contract award by the German Border Police.

The EasyPASS project will equip passport control areas at all major German airports with electronic gates (eGates), and provide travelers with electronic passports (ePassports) the option to pass through fast, automatic passport checks. Cognitec will deliver face recognition hardware and software for integration with the gates.

A central component of the eGates, Cognitec’s innovative face recognition system automatically captures a portrait image of the passenger entering the gate. The technology instantly compares the image to the passport photo in order to verify the identity of the passenger. Cognitec has optimized the system to ensure efficiency and ease of use for the passenger while capturing best-quality images that guarantee high verification accuracy, thus fully complying to guidelines published by the European Border Police (Frontex).

“Cognitec has developed pioneering face recognition technology for border control solutions since the inception of our company. We are proud to bring another innovation to this market and to such an important project in Germany,” says Alfredo Herrera, Managing Director of Cognitec. “We also look forward to continuing a successful partnership with secunet and Bundesdruckerei.”
