Further Failure In UK Post Office Infrastructure

LogRhythm : 05 March, 2012  (Technical Article)
Logrhythm comments on the most recent outage of IT systems that has hit the network of post offices throughout the UK
Further Failure In UK Post Office Infrastructure
Yesterday it was reported that the Post Office suffered a nationwide IT failure, with its branches unable to process anything that requires a computer. This is the fourth major service interruption to hit the Post Office's electronic systems over the past nine months.

Ross Brewer, managing director and vice president, international markets, LogRhythm, made the following comments:

“While the Post Office has now restored its electronic system, this outage caused considerable disruption to its many customers, and not for the first time. Consumers have taken to public avenues like Twitter to vent their frustration, and consumer rights groups are up in arms about the organisation’s apparent inability to manage its IT infrastructure.

“With IT now an integral part of daily operations, the network infrastructures of organisations of all sizes are growing rapidly, both in size and complexity, and incidents like the Post Office’s outage indicate just how difficult it can be to manage these sprawling IT estates. And while vital clues indicating potential network problems can be found amongst the log data generated by all the various IT equipment, this data is all too often ignored, or processed in an inefficient and disparate manner.

“Organisations which are struggling to manage their IT networks often need a much more granular view of network activity to help them identify, isolate and remediate any issues the moment that they occur.  As such, it is essential to have centralised log management systems in place that can collect and analyse all log data as and when it is generated, in a coordinated way. This ensures any equipment failure or other unexpected activity is identified in real-time, and acts as an early warning system for potential network failures, ensuring problems are identified and solved before they become major incidents. The deep insight into IT systems provided by constant monitoring does not just give organisations reassurance that their networks are working optimally, it also provides the actionable intelligence required to maintain network security, enabling the real-time identification and remediation of cyber security threats before they have a chance to do any damage.”
