First Cyrillic Domain Takes SSL Certification

Comodo Group : 14 September, 2010  (Application Story)
Comodo has issued an SSL certificate to Rusonyx for the first domain to use the Russian alphabet
Hosting provider, Rusonyx is the first web host in the Russian Federation (RF) to issue SSL certificates supporting Russian-language domains through a partnership with Comodo, a certificate authority and Internet security organization. Today Русоникс.Рф/ is the first RF domain protected by a modern and secure Comodo SSL certificate.

SSL certificates are needed to protect data that is transmitted between the website and client, as well as for protection from the numerous fraudulent schemes on the Internet such as phishing, which involve fake websites created to steal confidential data. An SSL certificate encrypts the data being transmitted, protecting personal data or clients' authorized information from being intercepted by intruders, and allows site visitors to verify that they are visiting a legitimate site, not a fake.

Previously, many owners of domain names in the Russian Federation have been faced with the impossible task of protecting visitors to their websites because using standard SSL certificates did not support the Cyrillic characters used in RF domains. Now, thanks to Rusonyx and modern Comodo SSL certificates, any site that uses the RF domain can be safely protected.

Alexei Goncharov, CEO Rusonyx said, 'Protection of sites in the Russian domain RF is a priority of the federal level. This applies to all sites, working with user's personal data. Up until now, the issue of safety while working with RF-domains was unresolved.'

'Today, I am pleased that we now offer a quality solution to this problem,' he said.

'Comodo is deeply committed to providing support for Internationalized Domain Names (IDN) and supports Russian ..РФ domains to extend the breadth and depth of security coverage for our customers worldwide,' said Melih Abdulhayoglu, CEO and chief security architect.

'The internationalization of domain names helps Comodo customers that need a technical solution to translate names written in language-native scripts into an ASCII text representation that is compatible with the Domain Name System. Internationalized Domain Names can only be used with services such as ours that are specifically designed for such use and they require no changes in customer infrastructure,' he said.
