Fire Security Installation At UK Supermarket Group

ADI Global Distribution : 21 June, 2010  (Application Story)
The Netto supermarket chain in the UK has chosen open protocol fire system enabling best of breed component selection, ease of maintenance and flexibility
Fire Security Installation At UK Supermarket Group
ADI Global Distribution is committed to delivering complete, multi-brand security solutions. ADI recently supplied Bradford-based Barker Electrical, who installed a state-of-the-art, new 'open protocol' fire security system for Netto, the UK supermarket chain.

The new system has been developed to protect Netto's premises in East Ardsley, West Yorkshire. These include a two-storey office block and a large storage and central warehousing facility. The latter houses various refrigeration units, including fridges, freezers and chillers.

Netto's facility was previously protected by a closed protocol system. The disadvantage of this is that it tied Netto into a single supplier. Although the initial costs may be smaller, these are often offset by much higher maintenance costs. As Netto's system grew older, it needed more repairs and became increasingly difficult and expensive to maintain. However, as it was a closed system, Netto had to use the original supplier for any new parts and servicing, which ultimately proved to be costly and inefficient.

Netto recognised the need for an open protocol system, offering flexibility, lower overall costs and a greater choice of maintenance options. The company chose an Apollo fire system, recommended by ADI and installed by Barker Electrical of Bradford. Alex Taylor of Barker Electrical stated, "It was clear that Netto would not have been satisfied with another closed system and was more than happy with the products recommended by ADI."

The new fire security system includes a full range of Apollo open protocol equipment, including beam detectors in the warehouse and conventional detection devices to protect the refrigeration units. Vince O'Malley, ADI Fire Sales Executive, said: "The different areas of the facility created the need for multiple solutions. For instance, some areas of the warehouse operate at different temperatures, ranging from -5oC to -30oC. We therefore had to choose the devices carefully to meet the different temperature regimes without causing false alarms."

The system has a four loop Mx-4400 advanced fire panel with repeaters, and an Mx-4010 remote display terminal in the security gatehouse. Vince continues: "The installation is working well and Netto are very happy with it. Open protocol equipment is widely available from multiple suppliers and is a far better option for end users. It gives them a choice of installers, suppliers and, even more importantly, maintenance options over the lifetime of the system."
