Fingerprint access control for Scottish children's nursery.

UK Biometrics International : 12 October, 2007  (Application Story)
Pre-school children from Aberdeen receive protection at their nursery by fingerprint biometric access control which provides better protection than the numeric code lock that it replaced.
The future has arrived at an Aberdeen nursery with the first installation of a biometric access system in a children's nursery in Scotland.

Winnie's World, on Bon Accord Street, now has a hi-tech UK Biometrics fingerprint scanner at its front door to replace the old numeric keypad that meant anyone with the number could get inside, whether they were supposed to know the code or not. The biometric system is the first of its kind in Scotland to be fitted to a nursery.

Now only 122 select people - staff, parents and carers - who have their fingerprints registered on the computer database are allowed entry, making the building as secure as it can possibly be.

Pre-school Supervisor Wendy Cowie said the new system gets rid of any fears people may have had about the safety of their children.

She said: "With the old system there was always a chance the number could have been passed on without our knowledge and that wasn't good from a security point of view.
"Now it's a lot more efficient because we don't have people forgetting the code and it's logistically better because we don't have to change codes at regular intervals."

The scanner, developed and installed by UK Biometrics, is quickly growing in popularity at nurseries, schools and council buildings across the United Kingdom because of the unprecedented security it offers.

It stores all registered fingerprints on an encrypted database, meaning that files can't be copied, giving anyone concerned about identity theft complete peace of mind.
Miss Cowie added: "The new entry system has received a very positive reaction from parents.

"The fact that it guarantees no unauthorised people can get past the front door is its main attraction because everybody else has to ring a doorbell to alert a member of staff who then can verify who the caller is before deciding whether or not they can enter the building."

"The computer system and display screen also alerts staff if the door has been forced and other potential problems, so there's a lot more to it than just a simple entry system."
The nursery, owned by proprietor Amanda Duncan, caters for about 60 children aged up to eight years, including an after-school club.

UK Biometrics Operations Director Shaun Oakes, said: "These days it is becoming more and more apparent that children need as much protection as they can possibly be given, and parents are always concerned about them when they are not under their supervision.

"By making their nurseries and schools as secure as they can possibly be we are giving them great peace-of-mind which is something very rarely found in this day and age."
UK Biometrics also works with retina scanners and face recognition systems among other ground-breaking techniques to develop its wide range of security products, which have attracted critical acclaim across the industry.

UK Biometrics is a leading supplier of fingerprint entry systems, membership systems and time & attendance systems with offices in Glasgow, Newcastle upon Tyne, Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, NW London, SW London, Swansea and Bournemouth.
