FideAS File Enterprise supplies encryption for sensitive data

Security IP : 16 October, 2009  (New Product)
Encryption product from Applied Security for the protection of data on servers, desktops and mobile storage devices is now available to UK users from Security IP
Value added distributor Security IP is marketing a new file encryption product for the protection and control of sensitive data. It has been developed by Applied Security, a Germany-based company specialising in data leakage prevention.

Most organisations are well-prepared against Internet-based attacks by hackers, viruses and other forms of security threats. According to a recent survey by Pricewaterhouse Coopers, 95 percent of all companies have a firewall and a virus scanner and 55 percent own an Intrusion Detection System. These technologies are designed to prevent unauthorised access to the company network, but they don't prevent sensitive data from leaking out. More than 80 percent of all malware from the Internet is programmed to steal sensitive data (Source: Symantec Internet Threat Report 2008). Alarmingly, the greatest danger comes from within - employees are the biggest risk.

FideAS File Enterprise closes the door to both internal and external data thieves. Comprising a scalable file and folder encryption system, augmented by Critical Data Control, Application Control and Device Control, it is designed for implementation by any organisation to protect data from unauthorised access or use. FideAS File Enterprise can be set up to provide several users and workgroups with secure access to confidential data whilst preventing unauthorised use of that data. The encryption process itself is completely transparent to the user and does not interfere with the normal workflow and business process operations.

The encryption software protects files on servers, workstations, laptops and mobile storage devices, It works on the principle of controlling who and what applications have access to specific files anywhere in the organisation; and what those persons can do with that file - for example cut and paste. The Application Control ensures that only authorised applications can be associated with file types, thus preventing access by malware - trojans, spyware and other unauthorised applications, such as screen capture software. In addition, by encrypting each file provides absolute privacy at all times to anyone other than those authorised, even if attempts are made to copy those files to removable storage devices. Comprehensive digitally signed logs provide a forensic trail and ensure regularity compliance.

Commenting on the new product, Security IP Account Manager, Steve Cornish, said: "Four out of five successful attacks come from people inside of an organisation, so having a product like FideAS File Enterprise on the network is critical. The software's ability to protect the organisation's data is comprehensive, regardless of where it is stored - on the network, desktops and even on remote laptops, it is practical, effective and simple to manage. Data breaches are a real and present danger and those organisations that do lose sensitive information are exposing themselves to the risk of consequential damages, the loss of confidence by customers and need to rebuild their reputation and brand image."

Version 4.0 adds a new client-server concept that reduces network traffic significantly by the elimination of online requests by client PCs. Other features include strong optimisation of performance, enhanced choice of encryption algorithms, and support for Microsoft Distributed File System (DFS) to enhance the software's functionality further. FideAS File Enterprise 4.0 now supports policy ageing and encryption of offline folders, along with several other powerful tools such as the prevention of screenshot grabbing and dragging and dropping of files.

Offline folders can now be encrypted and decrypted by the same group access rights as the corresponding network shares, even if the user is not connected to the network. This means laptop users no longer need to copy files manually from protected network shares to protected folders on their local hard disk. The contents of these folders are automatically synchronised, thereby reducing the risk of overwriting new files by older ones.
