FAST appoints additional legal weight.

The Federation Against Software Theft : 29 February, 2008  (Company News)
General Counsel at the Federation Against Software Theft to lead the campaign for intellectual property rights in the UK.
The Federation Against Software Theft (The Federation) has appointed Julian Heathcote Hobbins to the position of General Counsel with effect from March 1, 2008.

Julian joined The Federation in July 2001 as Legal Counsel, before moving to Senior Legal Counsel. Prior to joining FAST he worked as a solicitor and gained experience in intellectual property law at the City law firm Theodore Goddard (now Addleshaw Goddard) advising Anti Copying In Design (ACID).

Julian heads up The Federation's Legal Affairs team which was created as a direct response to the persistent levels of software piracy in the United Kingdom.

Its primary responsibility reshapes to support the Federation thought leadership programme in areas such as Virtualisation and Open Source, its increased emphasis of promoting best practice and standards in business including leading on Federation policy work with Government.

Julian will continue to oversee the protection of Federation Members IP rights, the offering of investigatory expertise, guidance including a unique industry-led conduit to expert practitioners through lawyers, computer forensic professionals, Trading Standards and the Police with the Federation Legal Advisory Group (FLAG).

FLAG comprises 30 of the UK's leading law firms engaged in Information Technology and Intellectual Property operating in the UK and overseas. It provides support to The Federation by monitoring and advising on legal issues and developments on software Intellectual Property issues.

It meets several times each year to network, receive presentations on pertinent topics and review legal developments affecting the software industry in the UK. Also to determine whether action is required to alert appropriate governmental and other agencies to the industry's position.

With The Federation, FLAG has made submissions to Government and at European level on various proposed Directives, and made a significant contribution to the influential Gowers' review on Intellectual Property law.

Commenting on his new position, Julian said "I am delighted to accept this appointment; I look forward to spearheading the Federation's legal push against software misuse keeping pace with the march of technology."

Julian is supported by James Craig, newly appointed as Legal Counsel. James, a qualified barrister, will bolster the Legal Affairs Team assisting in driving through objectives.
