Everton Football Club Chooses E-mail Security Service from Webroot

With fewer than 1% of Everton's e-mail receipts being genuine correspondence, the UK premiership team has decided to deploy Webroot E-mail Security Service to take on the challenging task of filtering incoming mail
Webroot has been chosen by one of the UK's Premiership football teams, Everton Football Club, to provide its award-winning Webroot E-mail Security Service.

Being a Premier League club and a household name in the UK, Everton Football Club is a prime target for spam and malware, delivered constantly in the guise of marketing pitches and other personal communications. As few as 1% of the football club's emails are legitimate business emails.

Steve Fell, Head of ICT for Everton Football Club, says, "We chose Webroot E-mail Security Service - which we purchased through Webroot partner Control Key - to replace the increasingly more expensive hardware required to cope with the huge growth in illegitimate emails being received. Also, some forms of communication simply couldn't get through, and if those emails are for the Chairman, that clearly isn't good. Ensuring the flow of legitimate emails is key, especially during the player transfer season when an extraordinary amount of traffic comes through on the last day. Now, I'm delighted to say - the email queues have disappeared."

Everton is eager to protect its brand from being associated with disreputable email communication. They wanted a solution that ensured confidential information isn't leaked, and secures the Club's network from malware infection via email.

Fell continues, "The service was recommended by the football community, including other clubs and network suppliers. The seamless implementation of Webroot® E-mail Security Service took only 30 minutes and the simple and user-friendly interface is a welcome relief. Everton hasn't had a problem since. We now have speedier and more secure delivery of emails. And, we no longer experience bounce-backs from emails sent, which we had experienced in the past."

Better customer relations are another factor as Fell elaborates, "We get many emails requesting tickets for football games, so if any of those are blocked, like they used to be, we'd be looking at possible lost revenue. Customer service is paramount and now we are confident that we capture every customer enquiry and don't look unresponsive - an important part of preserving our brand image."

Fell and his team are also deploying additional elements of Webroot Security, including deep content scanning of email to protect against confidential business information being leaked.

Fell is also happy with the cost compared to what he might have had to budget for: He says, "If we tried to manage our email internally, the cost, including hardware; software, extra licensing and a full-time administrator would have risen dramatically to tens of thousands."
