Enterprise storage security testing product now expanded

Codenomicon : 10 September, 2007  (New Product)
Quality improvements for network storage security testing product, Defensics
Codenomicon has expanded its File System and Storage Test Suite for the Defensics test platform. The test suite allows storage vendors to rapidly perform rigorous security and availability tests to identify and resolve file system and storage network protocol exposures that can result in brand, quality, integrity and compliance risks The expanded test suite achieves more comprehensive storage management security assurance and now covers the CIFS, HTTP, iSCSI, NFS, SNMPv3, SSH, and SSL implementations.

Codenomicon also announced it has joined the Storage Network Industry Association (SNIA) as part of its commitment to support the storage and storage services market The Defensics test platform and respective storage test suite will be demonstrated live at the CIFS and iSCSI plugfest within SNIA's upcoming Storage Developers Conference held in San Jose on September 10-13, 2007.

"With the adoption of iSCSI, remote out-of-band mangement, distributed and department storage, and storage service, the extent of network data storage and its respective risks proliferates. Communications and data protocols can be an effective means for service disruption and attack," said Anne MacFarland, research analyst at The Clipper Group. "Malformed communications and files can not only bring a system or service down, but can affect the integrity and operations of connected systems, applications, storage subsystems, and data. Vendors, service providers and high-profile clients can and should use pre-deployment test solutions, such as those being offered by Codenomicon, to reduce that risk and liability."

Typically segregated and partitioned, networked storage and storage subsystems environments often interface to external subsystems, remote data and management access capabilities, as well as storage services that leverage public networks and respective open protocols. To thwart potential security and availability threats, stronger data management and data access safeguards have been implemented industry wide. However, storage vendors, and their customers, still face service exposures and zero-day attacks.

Codenomicon Defensics enables storage developers to preemptively mitigate unknown and published threats in storage products and services prior to release or deployment - reducing service failure, zero-day attack and system breach threats. Employed as secure development lifecycle best practice, the system can execute thousands of well-documented test cases to accelerate flaw identification and remediation. The test software can be easily integrated into any existing test system to provide greater quality assurance with nominal resource and time impact.

"The real dollar costs and reputation risks associated with system patching, product recall, service downtime and data corruption are significant when it comes to networked systems and storage. Preemptive security and robustness testing offsets these risks," said Isaac Sundarajan, President and CEO of Codenomicon. "Codenomicon is pleased to join SNIA as a testament to our commitment to the storage industry. We encourage leading storage vendors to make similar testing assurances as those implemented by their network equipment counterparts."

"SNIA and the Storage Security Information Forum (SSIF) continues to spearhead stored data security and secure storage management initiatives and awareness," said Eric Reidel, chairman of SNIA SSIF. "We welcome Codenomicon's participation in SNIA and look forward to the company's contributions towards extending storage system quality and security assurance."

The Defensics File System and Storage Test Suite covers the CIFS, HTTP, iSCSI, NFS, SNMPv3, SSH, and SSL protocols. Storage developers and service providers can also take advantage of Codenomicon's Quickstart service to expedite system implementation, knowledge transfer, and documented assurance verification. For a limited time, Storage Vendors and Service providers can receive a charter Storage test suite promotional discount.
