Energy Cost Calculator For Data Centre Virtualisation Projects

"Server virtualization strategies will gain additional momentum as the Carbon Reduction Scheme incentivises larger private and public enterprises to address organisational energy use and efficiency," said Peter Hannaford, Vice President, Datacenters & Alliances, EMEA/LAM, APC by Schneider Electric.

"However, while a reduction in energy use can be anticipated as the physical number of machines is consolidated, many companies will fail to maximise their full energy savings entitlement because they have not addressed physical infrastructure requirements as part of their Virtualisation programme. To gain the full benefit, both the data centre and the IT load should be addressed as a single, integrated system," Hannaford continued.

To help companies make decisions regarding the physical requirements for virtualizing IT loads, APC has developed a free to use online tool, available from the company's Data Center Efficiency Portal. The calculator can be used at an early stage of planning for informed decision-making and to experiment with different scenarios and approaches. In line with the recommendations in the EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres Efficiency, the tool encompasses both IT and physical infrastructure considerations.

Peter Hannaford said, "The Virtualization Energy Cost Calculator is an easy to use tool that allows the user to make and alter a number of inputs such as the number of servers, rack space utilisation, system design and energy use in order to assess pre- and post-virtualization environments. It has been developed by APC to enable datacentre and IT managers to make a ready assessment of the impact of virtualization upon datacentre energy and space."

Virtualization can bring many benefits to the datacentre, saving energy, increasing computing throughput, freeing up floor space, and facilitating load migration and disaster recovery. Less well known is the extent to which savings can be further optimised if power and cooling infrastructure is right-sized to the virtualized load. The Virtualization Energy Cost Calculator demonstrates the point graphically and also provides indicative efficiency outputs for both pre- and post-virtualization environments.
