Lumension has been selected by Derbyshire County Council to help them achieve complete visibility of its security posture for 8,000 endpoints across 430 locations. The move follows a drive to meet government information security directives and improve the results of bi-annual Risk Management audits.

With 90 per cent of cyber attacks exploiting known vulnerabilities, Derbyshire County Council selected Lumension Vulnerability Management Solution to ensure newly released security fixes are quickly applied to their servers, desktops and laptops to protect them from malware infection, cyber attack and data leakage. Through Lumension Vulnerability Management Solution, Derbyshire is able to achieve high visibility of its security posture, centrally assess vulnerabilities, rapidly remediate and monitor the entire IT environment with its patented Digital Fingerprinting Technology that matches all vulnerabilities to available fixes. It then distributes the patches and performs ongoing audits of the vulnerability status of the entire IT estate.

"What we really needed was a solution that would allow us to see every IT asset on our network, assess its security status, rapidly remediate and audit the actions that we had taken to bring it up to standard," said Rob Skermer, server manager at Derbyshire County Council. "Another issue we faced was achieving compliance with the legacy desktops on our network. With Lumension, we can now control the patching, vulnerability management and reporting on the security status of this hardware while also controlling the complete network from a central location."

After a successful trial period and staff education programme the solution was rolled out across the entire IT environment, beginning with the patching of the legacy hardware. This brought the desktops up to speed with the set baseline security status established for all of the Council's machines. Lumension was then used to assess the patch status of the Council's IT endpoints, prioritise those that needed urgent updates, distribute patches, report on the security status before and after the patch installation, and schedule future updates.

"We prioritised remote workers, high density sites and remote sites for the initial roll out and Lumension allowed us to schedule patch updates. One of the key issues was managing the network vulnerabilities created by ageing machines. Lumension has allowed us to extend the life of this legacy hardware by bringing every machine up to the baseline mandated by the government regulations," said Skermer.

Commenting on the deployment, Andrew Clarke, senior vice president of international sales for Lumension, said: "We are delighted to have been selected by Derbyshire County Council. Public sector organisations are constantly refining best practice in data handling as a result of the volume of highly sensitive public information stored on their networks. Derbyshire County Council has demonstrated the value of using Lumension Vulnerability Management Solution to reinforce the importance of existing policies designed to safeguard public data, by gaining control and visibility of the security posture for its entire IT environment."
