Encrypted data file handling

Security IP : 17 June, 2009  (New Product)
File sharing within the organisation can now be handled more securely with DataGuard, an encrypted data handling appliance from Security IP
Security IP of Banbury, Oxfordshire, has introduced DataGuard, a data protection solution developed in Germany by Applied Security GmbH - Apsec. Adapted from Apsec's award winning network encryption solution, called 'fideAS file Enterprise', DataGuard ensures maximum privacy for individuals or small firms that need to share sensitive information.

The technology provides professional levels of encryption to protect folders and files on desktops, laptops, USB sticks and any other removable storage media. As most organisations collaborate with individual contractors, there is a growing awareness of the need for effective data loss prevention measures to protect confidentiality.

Commenting on the launch, SIP director, Andi Robinson said: 'With data security such a key issue after the recent high-profile incidents, encryption is a great way to ensure that even if a computer or storage device is lost or stolen, the data contained on it cannot be accessed without authorisation."

'For our channel partners, this topic will be a great door opener and we see good potential for sales to professional sectors such as recruitment agencies, financial services and accountants. DataGuard is already proving popular and a number of companies are currently trialling the software, including those in the legal profession, where data security is understandably of great importance.'

The software is easy to use and once installed operates without impacting on the performance of the computer. Once logged into DataGuard, users can define areas, such as document folders and USB ports, that require protection and any files written to that folder or device are then encrypted and can only be accessed via a password or pass key as required.

Multiple users of the same computer can create their own private folders to ensure security, whilst there is also the capability to securely share data between authorised computers that have DataGuard installed or by using a secure USB stick created by DataGuard. There are no worries if you forget your password or destroy your key, as the passphrase system allows users to enter a predefined phrase and gain access to data alternatively a master key can be generated on install for safe keeping off the PC.
