Electronic Tool Cabinet Key Management

Traka : 17 November, 2010  (New Product)
iFob system from Traka enables key management and access tracking for tool cabinets
Traka has adapted its proven key management solutions to control and audit the use of electronic tool cabinets. Simple and effective tool control is achieved in an easy-to-implement extension to existing site access controls or time and attendance system. Traka provides the perfect low-cost way to ensure that strict procedures are implemented, every time.

At the heart of the Traka system is the iFob. These robust devices contain intelligent chips and can be attached to existing keys with a security seal, or alternatively be used as the key itself. The iFob then becomes a key with a memory, which records where and when it was used, expiring after a pre-determined time. Crucially, it is also a key that can't be copied. From the audit trail produced by the iFob, it's easy to see who has accessed tools, either by making an enquiry at the Traka cabinet, or by making use of Traka's user-friendly Traka32 support software.

If the iFob is used as the key, it will only activate designated pieces of equipment. When a user finishes a shift, he or she must return the iFob, automatically downloading all user activity to the Traka cabinet and the Traka32 software. This audit trail allows an administrator to know who has had access to every asset managed by the system. So, if for example, a tool is missing, a full list can be produced of staff who have accessed the relevant cabinet. Then, by determining the areas in which the identified staff were working, the location of the missing tool can be similarly identified.

Traka cabinets can be used to manage and audit keys for standard steel lockers or tool cabinets such as the Lista E-Lock, with electronic locking mechanisms, inside which tool kit sets may be stored. By auditing access to the lockers, the system audits access to the tool sets. iFobs can be used to confirm that tool kits have been inspected as complete and undamaged or that they are correctly calibrated. Traka's fault reporting system guarantees that any damaged or faulty units identified by a user will generate an immediate notification to the appropriate team leader or maintenance technician for service or replacement.

"Businesses that have installed Traka have experienced a big improvement in the ease and efficiency of their asset management," says Martyn Baker of Traka. "With the complete user accountability given by the system, there is no longer any reason for lost keys, missing equipment or poor security. And, because it's so user-friendly, Traka saves time and paperwork, increasing productivity as a result."

Traka has a range of extended features including curfew warnings, SMS or email alerts for critical key transactions and LED illuminated key strips, showing clearly which key to take and where to return it.

Traka is used extensively in the UK and around the world and the company continues to develop the system as new improvements and technologies arise. Traka is used in many different market sectors, among them Distribution and MHE Management; Fleet Management; Property Access Control; Casinos; Petrochemical and Mining; Airports, Docks and Railways and Military and Emergency Services.
