Educational Rented Netbooks Protected With Avast Anti-Virus

Avast Software : 29 November, 2011  (Application Story)
Christ the King College is providing its students with rented netbooks as part of a new scheme with the use of anti-virus software to protect their assets
Educational Rented Netbooks Protected With Avast Anti-Virus
AVAST Software, developer of the award winning avast! antivirus, has announced that Christ the King College is using its software to protect students as part of an innovative netbook rental scheme. By taking advantage of educational software discounts and low cost hardware, the school has pioneered a scheme where students can rent a fully equipped netbook with full software stack for just £15 per month.

The cost of the hardware and software would normally equate to several hundred pounds upfront costs plus substantial annual subscriptions, “But we have managed to secure educational discounts from ICT suppliers which means we are able to rent out each netbook at a fraction of the normal price,” explains Stephen Wills, Network ICT manager for the college. The school also provides antivirus protection and IT support to help students excel in their studies.

Christ the King College is a joint Church of England and Catholic college located in Newport on the Isle of Wight. The College has over 700 computers under management and moved to avast! In April 2010 following ongoing issues with its legacy Sophos anti virus software. The college also worked closely with Avosec, an avast! Partner, to secure educational pricing.

The avast! software is also optimised for low powered devices and the management interface means that Wills and his team require only a minor amount of time to ensure that both its desktops and loan netbooks are fully protected. The college has had the Avast! 4.8 in place now for 18 months and the software has detected all threats and proved easy to manage. “A particular issue for us is the use of USB memory sticks and avast has proved well suited to detecting these threats, especially on low powered netbooks,” comments Wills.

The College is now planning to migrate to the new avast! Business Protection software using the new 6.0 detection engine later this year.
