EAL4 certification achieved by ProtectDrive

SafeNet : 23 September, 2008  (New Product)
Full disk encryption product certification enables ProtectDrive to be marketed to Government organisations
SafeNet has announced that its full disk encryption solution, ProtectDrive, received Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level 4 (EAL4) certification, a security standard recognised by government agencies and industries around the world.

"The certification of ProtectDrive to EAL4 standard further demonstrates SafeNet's commitment to supporting our customers around the world with the best solutions for securing sensitive data," said Derek Tumulak, vice president, product management, SafeNet.

ProtectDrive is the only full-disk encryption solution that is part of a comprehensive enterprise data protection suite that protects not only endpoint devices, but data throughout the enterprise. ProtectDrive encrypts the entire hard drive of laptops, workstations, and servers, as well as removable media, such as USB flash drives, in order to protect data in cases of theft or loss of hardware. Other solutions in the suite protect fileservers, databases, applications and networks.

This is the first solution of its kind that can be deployed and managed directly using Microsoft Active Directory or ADAM, providing high levels of assurance, reduced management complexities, and significant cost savings. ProtectDrive is one of only two solutions in the industry that also meets the stringent FIPS 140-2 Level 2 security validation.

To earn Common Criteria EAL4 certification, ProtectDrive's architecture and security specifications have gone through a rigorous testing and evaluation process by an independent laboratory. An independent analysis also included a methodical review of the physical security, engineering and quality processes at SafeNet's ProtectDrive development centre. In providing a broad range of evaluation criteria for many types of commercial and government-grade IT security products, EAL4 is the highest level commonly recognised in more than 20 countries worldwide.

SafeNet and its partners have delivered hundreds of thousands ProtectDrive licenses to various government agencies and enterprises globally. It is the only product on the Australian government Evaluated Product List that provides data protection on laptops and PCs, encryption of internal and external storage devices, pre-boot authentication controls and access controls over I/O devices.

Sensitive information stored on devices such as laptops and flash drives is often unaccounted for and unprotected, and can be devastating if lost or stolen. Any organisation that handles sensitive data must consider the ramifications if data is lost or stolen, including lawsuits, negative publicity, lost revenue, and damage to reputation. In some cases, it may be a matter of national security, with lives at risk.
