E-mail security appliance cuts 96% of spam at Hellermann Tyton

Nebulas Solutions : 19 November, 2008  (Application Story)
Installing IronPort e-mail security at UK cable manufacturer, Hellermann Tyton, results in massive fall in levels of spam received into inboxes
Nebulas Security has just cut 96% of all spam email traffic at Hellermann Tyton, the cable management manufacturer.

Nebulas Security achieved the massive drop in spam volume by implementing an IronPort email security appliance for the Crawley based company. In its first operational month, more than 1.7 million spam emails were identified and quarantined. Following some additional analysis by Hellermann Tyton's IT team, a further 39,000 emails were detected as spam and 32 viruses were detected.

As a result of deploying this new technology, Hellermann Tyton's IT team has gained an additional 4 to 5 man hours every day and can now focus on more strategic projects, rather than checking email traffic, according to Tony Lambert, the company's UK IT manager. He explained: "Before Nebulas Security implemented this solution, we'd come in every Monday to around 6500 emails which had been quarantined over the weekend. We needed to investigate all of them, as about 50 were genuine. During the rest of the week, we had to sift through around 2000 emails each day."

"I recall 15th July 2008 as the day we stopped spam in its tracks" added Lambert. "It's had a huge impact on this business. There's been a massive drop in network traffic, so we've made big savings in bandwidth and can also prolong the life of our Exchange servers. It's also resulted in a much more reliable network".

Nebulas Security deployed two IronPort email security appliances; the second appliance only becoming operational if the first one fails. This guarantees an uninterrupted email service for Hellermann Tyton's 250 email users across the UK and Ireland. Given the success of this project, Hellermann Tyton is now working with Nebulas Security on further strengthening its web content security.
