DVTel brings Latitude to London college

DVTel : 14 May, 2008  (Application Story)
.net platform digital surveillance recording introduced into split campus Havering College using Latitude network video management system version 5 from DVTel
DVTel has announced that Havering College of Further and Higher Education has upgraded from Latitude NVMS 3.5 to Latitude NVMS V5. Havering College serves the London Borough of Havering from three local campuses and several satellite and outreach centres, drawing students from Redbridge, Barking and Newham, as well as Essex, Kent and beyond.

Mitie, widely recognised as one of the UK's leading providers of IP-based CCTV and access control systems, introduced Havering to DVTel's advanced, open systems technology, and oversaw project implementation.

Two years ago, the College installed DVTel's Latitude NVMS Version 3.5 to replace failing DVRs. The new DVTel solution provided many benefits: improved frame rate and video quality without excessive storage demands; "mix and match" frame rates and resolutions for each camera according to need; allowed cost effective expansion; and enabled live view and control of cameras from any PC on the network.

Over the last six months, the College has moved from the Visual Basic Platform Latitude NVMS 3.5 to the latest and greatest version of Latitude NVMS V5, which is built on Microsoft .NET Version 3. Microsoft .NET is the platform that over 90% of the world's corporations demand as the development platform for all of their software-based products. By leveraging .NET, DVTel has moved the competitive bar even higher in deployment and serviceability, reliability, performance, and data security.

As part of the system upgrade, the College has also implemented IP cameras and is now deploying DVTel's Altitude 9460 Mini-dome cameras from the Pro Series. Havering was impressed with the 9460 model's robust, full frame rate, dual streaming capabilities, rugged industrial construction, vandal resistant housing, and ability to work in extreme low light conditions. Since installing DVTel's IP-based video surveillance system, the College has seen a 25% decrease in violent crime, and they have been able to effectively prosecute a majority of major and petty crimes, thus providing a much safer environment for both students and faculty members.

David Petrook, DVTel Managing Director, commented, "Havering College is a prime example why you want to implement a DVTel IP-based solution. First, it is the ease of upgrading to an entirely new system simply by installing new software. This ease of upgrading demonstrates how far CCTV has evolved. In the past, Havering would have needed to replace significant amounts of hardware with only the possibility of reusing the cameras. In addition, the College has the flexibility to leverage off-the-shelf equipment when more servers, storage or clients are required. There is the significant benefit of a solution that is built using the latest standards by the largest provider of development software, Microsoft. Finally, Havering as with any of our customers experiences the freedom of owning an open-based software solution that allows you to choose Edge devices from multiple vendors."

Havering College plans to continue expansion and grow the solution with their physical security strategy.
